Guest guest
On Monday I see a therapist. She disagrees with my Asperger's diagnosis. My psychiatrist and previous therapist (psychologist) maintain that I have AS albeit mild. I know who I am is not simply my diagnoses, but my life experiences deeply incorporate my diagnoses. To use an outside example, I have IIH (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension). Ten years ago it was frightening because we had to do an MRI to rule-out the possibility of a brain tumor. I also had to have a spinal tap. I was anxious that my vision would be damaged. I'm now stable with out medications. But my identity includes these experiences and this disease that I have to monitor for the rest of my life. Who I am is in part the IIH, the MRI, and the spinal tap. Am I just this disease (the IIH)? No. But who I am includes this disease. Who I am includes the Aspie qualities. When my therapist suggests that I am not an Aspie, that strikes deeply at who I am. <sigh> Maybe it shouldn't? and the zoo.
