Xifaxan is being used by some Dr's as an off label prescribed med for HCV related encephalopathy with great results but it is very expensive.

For everyone with encephalopathy: There is a newish drug that hasworked wonders for me. It's called rifaximin (US brand name Xifaxan)and has been on the market in Italy for nearly twenty years. It's anon-systemic antibiotic and was originally developed to treattravellers' diarrhoea. It kills the bacteria in your intestines thatproduce ammonia. I'm completely off of lactulose though I understandsome MDs use it in combination with lactulose. I've been off lactulosefor 3 weeks and it's made a huge difference in my quality of life (I'ma pre-op TX patient). I have way more energy than I did on lactulose,my head is clearer, edima has gone down and NO MORE DIARRHOEA! Insteadof drinking goo 4 times a day I take 2 pills 3 times a day. I can'tsay enough good things about this drug. The only downside is it'sincredibly expensive. About $700 per month in California. If you haveHE, talk to your doctor about it and

see if your insurance to pay forit. It may take some work but it can be well worth it!
