What's the difference between a tic and a stim?

Hi,

My Asperger's son's OCD behaviors are becoming more noticeable. One

behavior we'd really like him to abandon is holding his food near his

nose and smelling it periodically throughout a meal. I saw something

on another list about salicylates and started researching, but got

really confused. I guess I really don't know a tic from a stim. Can

someone explain?
