Hi ***************** First we tried it because I learned about it from Dr. Cave's book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations." The book indicated that children who respond have a hereditary predisposition to thyroid, pituitary and/or night blindness issues. My cousin and uncle have thryoid and my sister is on medication for life for a begign pituitary tumor. We have no history of night blindness. Those are the three risk factors that would predispose children to the type of damage that bethanechol helps. Many of the children move off the spectrum with CLO, Vitamins C and E, and diet intervention. That was not the case for us, but as I said earlier, it really helped vision processing which in

turn helped behavior. It improved focus and he gained speech (he had been non-verbal). We are fairly confident that the bethanechol was key, because prior to that he had had 1.5 years of intense OT, speech and PT (integrated with sensory integration) and was basically nonverbal and made no progress. It really took about a year for him to make all that progress but then he plateaued and we are here -- HI! also has HHVI tithers of 1,400 (last test -- reference range < 10) and EBV of around 800. ***************** Here is the earlier post. I really do not have much more to add. Bethanechol is an

Rx. Most people have it compounded into liquid form with stevia so that it tastes okay and is cassein free. It is my understanding that some of the allergic reactions may occur because it contains cassein which is why we have it compounded -- plus my son does not swallow pills. The following is from Dr. Cave's "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations" that I think gives a pretty good summary. There are other summaries in the archives. *****************Bethancol (Urocholine)is an Rx that Dr. Megson used to bring a group of children off the autism spectrum. It helps to repair detached retinoid receptors (described below). It appears that bethanechol primarily works for children with a hereditary predisposition to thyroid, night blindness and/or

pituitary problems (begnign tumors). One or both parents who have a genetically inherited defect called G-alpha protein defect (which manifests itself as night blindness and/or various parathyroid, thyroid and pituitary gland conditions)may be at high risk of autism. If these children receive the pertussis toxin in the DTP or DTaP vaccines (with a neurotoxin like mercury or aluminum), which inserts a G-alpha protein defect and depletes children of their existing supply of Vitamin A, they will develop autism. That's because the toxin causes the G-alpha protein to separate from the retnoid receptors, which are critical for vision, sensory perception, language processing and attention. The CLO replenishes the Vitamin A and the Urocholine (generic bethanechol) stimulates the hippocampal retinoid receptor." Doctor Megson reported that she has moved many children off the spectrum who

have this G-alpha protein defect. The bad news is that many kids do not respond, but some do (approx 1 in 8). For those that respond, the affect is often huge. The good news is that often older children respond as well as younger ones(i.e., it is not age sensitive like some other therapies.) I hope this helps. VeraHiggins <chris@...> wrote: Vera, I would also be interested in hearing more about Bethanechol. We've been thinking about talking to our DAN about it. Our little guy seems to be a good fit for it. I've been reading Megson's information and reading posts from others using it with success. If you don't mind, what is the dosage and how much does your child weigh? Thanks for sharing. Everything I had heard was terrifying. I got the idea because someone from Israel posted on another list that University of Tel Aviv was having a lot of success with HFA kids by supplementing lithium. She posted that mothers who had difficulty going into labor on their own often have low lithium (but there are other symptems as well). This deficiency (while not genetic) is then passed on to their (I believe she said) male

offspring. The result is extremely awkard, socially clueless behavior. I could not go into labor with either pregnancy. That fit us to the tee. My 5 year old is learning to read and do simple math, likes to make play dates, is very social, craves the companinship of other little kids, is empathetic and reads between the lines, etc etc. However, if we had not told him, he would have ! absolutely no clue that it is inappropriate to walk up to a man at the mall and stick his 5 year old face in a stranger's crotch. And yes, that happened a lot at 3 and even at age 4. Even now he will do these completely outrageous things and when we say NO, he asks "Why not?" BTW, he was completely nonverbal with

no communication at 3-1/2. He slowly went from moderate/severe ASD to almost off the spectrum on compounded bethanechol. He did not do well on regular bethanechol, we believe because it contains cassein. He has also responded to MB12 and Valtrex. We need to add another anti-viral but that is a separate post. I had his lithium tested and it was so low that it did not register. Our DAN had no experience with it, and so I decided to try it alone. Mostly everything I read terrified me but we decided to go slow and give it a whirl. The homeopaths all favor Lithium ororate (what Pam is using). We were going to go that route (which the traditional websites are completely

opposed to) but then I found that Kirkman's has formulated lithium for Dr. Neubrander, who must obivously be using it on some of his patients. So we decided to go with the scientific "Eenie Meanie Miney Mo" game (to chose between ororate and Dr. Neubrander's formulation) and picked the elemental lithium from Kirkman's and are going really slow. We give him 1/8th of a dose and plan to go to 1/4th dose next week. As I said, we are going this one alone and it is scary. So far we have one definite positive -- for the first time ever -- he has pooped in the toilet every day without going in his pants. He now runs to the bathroom all by himself, pulls his pants down, and is even trying to clean himself. DH passed gas (sorry) and looked at him and pulled the back of my husband's pants. DH screamed "what do you think you are doing and my son replied, just checking to see if you went in your pants Dad -- and gave him a smart allic smile." So that is pretty huge -- he developed a sense of humor and he has finally started toilet training. Here is the link for Kirkmans. http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/products/drn/drnlithium.html No way would I supplement lithium without first checking lithum levels -- and any MD can write an Rx for the script. We are going really really slow and I have heard that it can have many nasty

side effects.
