Tea cakes

I have been so buy what with the aftermath of the fires, church stuff

etc, I've e not had a moment to read this list. I guess i will have

more time because last Sunday the water pump and then the head gasket

failed on my car so I have zero transportation. Due to physical

handicap, I am unable to walk 1/2 mile to the bus stop. Due to poverty,

I am unable to afford the special transportation for the disabled and

handicapped.

I had a list of errands and my best friend took me to do so, complaining

the whole time about the inconvenience. I couldn't get a ride to church

either because it was too inconvenient for anyone to pick me up. I

certainly don;t want to inconvenience anyone, but it certainly hurts to

know i am an inconvenience.

The worst thing about all this is that I am unable to get to mom in an

emergency.

I am sorry to lay my troubles on you.

I wanted to ask about tea cakes. I love pu-erh tea and in my errands

went to this big Asian supermarket where I can purchase it. They were

out of stock of the leaves, but in looking around I found pu-er tea in a

tea cake. A Yunnan Pu-erh Tea cake made by Foojoy, distributed by Hong

Kong Tea Clipper Co.

After reading on Happy Herbalist that the it promotes weight loss and

helps to lower cholesterol, I have made a point of drinking it and

making KT with it.

My question is this: how on earth does one get a piece of it off the

cake? The box says to break off a 1/2 inch piece but I sure am not

strong enough to break this thing. I whittled at it with a knife, tried

the cleaver on it and it is very hard to get a piece of the tea off of

it.

Any advice?

Oh and you may or may not remember in one of my first posts, I mentioned

that I have brews of KT going that had been brewing for over a month at

that point due to lack of time to do anything about it. Well, it's now

December and they are still sitting there on the counter, still

untouched. I am uncertain but they must have been sitting there for at

least 3 1/2 months. I wonder if it is still any good because there are

no more fruit flies clustered on top.

Here's another interesting thing... I had another batch of it made

previously that was too strong to drink straight so I put some of it in

an empty hair conditioner bottle and used it as a rinse to make sure all

the shampoo is gone when i wash my hair. I emptied that bottle sometime

ago and what with one thing and another, forgot to refill it. When i

washed my hair the other day, I picked up that bottle and was going to

use it, forgetting that it was empty. Only empty it was not. A SCOBY

had grown there, no tea, no sugar, just very sour drabs of KT. What

gives there?

Thank you from the long absent Lang

Dear , sorry for all the worrisome troubles, my prayers are with you. I

found the little cakes very hard to use for the reasons stated. I found the

easiest method of breaking them down to little chunks, was to use a big strong

knife that I lay upright on edge, with sharp edge down, then hit it hard with a

mallet or hammer. Of course, then the stuff flies everywhere, so if you can do

this inside a clear plastic bag or in the sink, it will save that frustration.

Once I have some fairly large chuncks, then it is fairly easy to

touch-and-release repeatedly the grate or grind button on my VitaMix or a food

processer. A little of this trouble goes a long way, so now I order the

puer-erh leaves online. My point is, you can manage, just keep working on what

you have. You will be surprised when you do get around to opening your ancient

KT, it may even be drinkable! But probably, it will be excellent starter and

vinegar to use in multiple ways. Keep working on the altitude of your attitude,

it is all up to you, this matter of being happy and content with one's life, in

all conditions and circumstances. I've had terrible lessons in this for many

years. Again and again, merciful Life has taught me the lessons of Love. . . .
