I've heard it described as a problem with the executive function area in the brain (as opposed to an AS trait where they may simply not know what the appropriate behaviour should be). There are those who believe that the skills of executive function can be taught. I don't disagee with that but in the meantime they need to be able to function with other people. Regardless of my son's other issues(AS) medication has done wonders for his ability to engage his "impulsivity filter". ************************* Very true , this sounds just like my situation exactly. My son was diagnosed younger as ADHD and then at age ten with Aspergers, which was almost 7 years ago. Anyway, the medications that he is on are like night and day for him. When his meds wear off, he is really hyper. When his meds have not kicked in, in the morning, before he takes them or when he first takes them, he is like a hyper kid and he acts silly and wild, AND he can not think, puts his clothes and coat on inside out, upside down etc. He has no common sense at all. HOWEVER, the medications help him to think and to stop and pause that minute or two before he acts or thinks. HE still is impulsive and still talks when he should not in classes. However, he would be far worse without his medications. They are very helpful to him. My husband has to take medications for his cholesterol, and kidney stones and also for his high blood pressure. Those are helping him sustain a longer life without a heart attack and heart problems as well as other health issues. Anyway, I see medications for the same way, as something that he needs for carrying on a normal and healthy life. in IL :_)
