Guest guest
Hi! I'm new to the list. My son is 9 and in 2nd grade. He was diagnosed with ADHD at 5 and just recently diagnosed with Aspergers. His class is going on a field trip to the zoo soon. His teacher is pregnant and cannot go. She sent home a note that my husband or I must go to give him medication because she will not be there to do it. He takes Focalin twice a day. Can the school keep him from going if a parent cannot go? I am going to go and if she had asked nicely, I probably would not have thought twice about it. However she didn't and now I'm just angry. Thanks for your wonderful insights! Dee in GA
Guest guest
If all the other students are required to be accompanied by a parent, then yes. If its just a matter of they not wanting to deal with the disablity, (meds are part of this) then no. You do have every right to " not accept " a decision made by the school or school staff. You can request a meeting with teacher, or with IEP team members, or with principle, or with appropriate school staff and work out a solution. Denying the student because of disability is a violation of the students civil rights. But your upset at the way it was put. I agree. Teacher could have said something like: " I won't be going...This is my concern.... Do you have any ideas on how to handle this? " Take it from a husband who knows, let this one go. Maybe she had a bad day. Forgive & forget this one. Move on to the next battle. After all, she is pregnant. Hormones and all. Tim
Guest guest
you need to have it included in his IEP that if he needs extra supervision while on field trips, that the district must provide that. We've been through this many times with my son, who for one reason or another had to have me (a single mom at the time) along. Then, once we got it in the IEP, he got suspended just before the trips...after 3 of these, I requested an FBA, siting the pattern emerging regarding field trips & shortly after that, we got a new principal, and things changed. He hasn't been excluded recently because of his AS, but it was a struggle for a few years before things got turned around. Good Luck & hope this helps Hugs & peace, Sheri BDee <dee_lowrey@...> wrote: Hi! I'm new to the list. My son is 9 and in 2nd grade.
