Guest guest
Like any addict, he has to WANT to quit or any kind of rehab or 12-step won't work. Relapse rates are high enough with people that want to quit. If he feels like he is being forced into it, it's going to be a long road. Even AS people need to hit rock bottom some times. Addiction is no fun. Is there any way you could join a support group for family members of addicts? It sounds like it might be a good thing for you. My 20 yr. old son Hello I am new hear and hope that someone can give me some advice. My twenty yr, old son is Aspergers. He is also LD, ADD(inattentive), hearing impaired in the higher frequencies and was just diagnosed bipolar stage 3. Has anyone ever heard of an AS kid who is also bipolar? He is also smoking pot whenver he can. We want to send him to a Narcanon program for four months in CA. He is not wanting to move forward with his life and he has addict-like behavior. The program in CA is not dual. It a good program in that it is not 12 step(been there, done that.) It is a holistic approach. They will give him his meds but also teach the importance of excercise, activity, nutrition and even help him get a job down the line if he so desires. We are at a cross roads here because I can't watch him every minute and I even thought of some type of residential center. I dont work outside the home but neither can I be here all the time. Is there anyone who can give me some direction? We are his legal quardians. Thank you so much. Ollie Talk is cheap. Use Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1¢/min. Guest guest
I am going to share my experiences with you. This is not very popular, but here goes. I started using at 13, I was strung out on heroin by 13 1/2. When I got pregnant with my son, I stopped, and went full bore ahead going to school - (I was 15) I did all three years of high school in a year and a half. Then I was working full time and going to college full time and started using again. I stopped for around a year, then when things got bad with my first husband who was very abusive and wouldn't work (at this time I had 2 kids, was working 50+ hour weeks, and 19 with a dh that didn't work), I started again, I lost custody for my kids for awhile - then I had sara at 24, did a one year program the whole nine yards. Now, I have not used sine 1996 - but I do drink - what I found is this. I was dx'd bipolar at age 13 after a serious suicide attempt, but had never been medicated - ever. Now at age 33 after therapy and the whole bit - and medication, I found that what I was doing was self medicating. I am adhd, ocd, and very mild bipolar, and I was miserable inside of myself. Now that I have medication that helps regulate my biochemical issues, using is not even something that I think about - ever. If you look into AA or have experience there (I went for over 9 years even though I had no alcohol problems but that is where there is long term recovery) you will learn that over 3/4 of the people there have diagnosed mood disorders adhd etc. It is extremely common to find that people use to self medicate. <freecyclemail@...> wrote: Like any addict, he has to WANT to quit or any kind of rehab or 12-step won't work.
