Guest guest
Trish, I feel the same way. Unfortunately the labels are necessary to get services. Guest guest
Hi : Nice to meet you. We live in Glencoe north of Chicago - cooler by the Lake. We are lucky enough to live in a terrific school district - we moved here for that reason, in fact. Your son sounds like a great guy. My son is doing surprisingly well in High School - very scary for Mom and Dad. He is mostly in a self- contained room but is mainstreamed for Science and PE (they call it Kinetic Wellness!). For us, watching our son grow up is bittersweet. We see him grow in so many ways but we see the gap between him and his peers widen. We worry, like all parents of children with special needs, about what will become of him after we pass on. (I just turned 46 - must be the birthday thing that is making me so introspective.) For the most part though, we are just grateful to have him in our lives. He is a warm and loving young man who does his best to deal with the many challenges that he faces. Anyway, nice to meet a fellow Illinoisian. Regards, Trish Mom to Noel age 15 - 4 month old Golden Retriever puppy wife to - husband extraordinaire and all around good egg > > > In a message dated 3/28/2006 11:10:58 A.M. Guest guest
I'd agree with you about the "labels"..................... While we don't really want to label anybody (and i try hard not to) there is a problem trying to access services. Some people (usually those who DO have the "label" of something) find it hard to understand WHY i want something. But as I've said before, when you start telling people "unknown genetic disorder, developmental delay, communication disorder, asd"............................... People's eyes start to glaze over and say WHAT?? Day to day it doesn't affect my life - i just get on with living and i wouldn't change for the world. I've met so may people and been to places that i would never other wise been able to. But sometimes, when i feel really low, it would be nice to have something just to explain and show that I'm not a bad mum. Re: labels etc.,.. Trish, I feel the same way.
