Guest guest
, Not Stan but I just saw this post and your other one. -Yes, OLE and virastop can cause yeast flares too. -As for the difference between the 2, acylcovir and valtrex; I believe, valtrex crosses the BBB and acyclovir does not unless it is IV acyclovir. -Stan says 3 weeks on Diflucan before starting Valtrex is a good idea. -I saw many posts where parents were having trouble getting their valtrex from CVS so I didn’t go there. I faxed my prescription to my compounding pharamacy and they also compounded it into a liquid. Some compounding pharmacies understand the treatments for our children more than typical pharmacies. My insurance is BC/BS HMO and they covered it. It often depends on the code they use. It should not be prescribed for Autism but for chronic herpes infections either in the throat or lips, etc. -Maybe some else can chime in about whether or not to stop the OLE and virastop and re add it after healing regression. I’m not sure on that one. I have seen in past posts that you prefer Valtrex over Acylcovir. OUr insurance will cover Acylcovir ($10/month co-pay) but not Valtrex ($300 +/month). Should we give Acylclovir a try first? (THis is for my 5 y/o daughter with Asperger's). Is there any danger in tryign Acylcovir first and then switching to Valtrex? Also, how long shold she be on anti-fungals before startign the anti- virals? Should we stop the OLE and Virastop when we start the anti-viral med? Guest guest
Alison, thanks so much for your reply. DO you, or does anyone, know if using acyclovir first before tryign valtrex could somehow make the valtrex less effective (i.e. cause hte virus to beocme resistant)? I thought I heard thisd soemwhere by word of mouth. THis is my only fear about doing a trial of the less expensive acyclovir before trying valtrex. > > , > > Not Stan but I just saw this post and your other one. > > -Yes, OLE and virastop can cause yeast flares too. > > -As for the difference between the 2, acylcovir and valtrex; I believe, > valtrex crosses the BBB and acyclovir does not unless it is IV acyclovir. > > -Stan says 3 weeks on Diflucan before starting Valtrex is a good idea. > > -I saw many posts where parents were having trouble getting their valtrex > from CVS so I didn't go there. Guest guest
We don't have a lot of reports of success with Acyclovir, some, but not many so any response from me would be an opinion. The only fear is that if Acyclovir gives the chance for the virus to mutate, it might be harder to kill off down the line. Acyclovir and Valtrex are not the same drug. Acyclovir doesn't cross the Blood Brain Barrier and Valtrex is less toxic and convierted to acyclovir right in the liver where some herpes strain viruses like to take up residence. That said, I really don't know. Your child might be one of those who do respond to Acyclovir... it's just hard to say. For me, I believe in doing what has the best chance to recover my child, but I do understand that money issues make it challenging and $10.00 is quite different than 300.00 If I was going to do acyclovir, I would also throw OLE on top of it and have an antifungal like Nizoral or Diflucan in there as well. - Stan > > Stan, > > THank you so much for starting this group. Guest guest
Stan, Thanks for your reply. I saw too the abstract you posted about Viruses mutating with Acylcovir. DO you think there would be much risk of mutation from trying Acycovlir for one month, adn then switching to Valtrex if we do not get good results? (If I try the formulary drug first, I might be able to convince our insurance to cover the non-formulary drug.) > > > > Stan, > > > > THank you so much for starting this group. Guest guest
Abstract is the right word in many ways in this situation. It's so hard to tell. I wouldn't worry. There are reports of people using acyclovir and then switching and seeing better results and there are even a small minority of cases where acyclovir worked better for a specific child for a period of time and then people have switched back to Valtrex. To me, the article just supports starting off with the best muti-approach strategy we have as early as possible so we have the best chance of getting this thing under control... and I wouldn't worry about what you did in the past... I would just aggressively pursue Valtrex with Diflucan or Nizoral and then add more on after that if you need to. - Stan > > > > > > Stan, > > > > > > THank you so much for starting this group.
