Guest guest
, Have you tried an Alpha smart??? My son is 10 years old and in 5th grade. His teacher allows him to use an alpha smart because he cannot write as quickly as his classmates can. It seems to work pretty well..... and he is able to keep up with his class. in Lancaster, Cawillgsmom98 <thegotts@...> wrote: Hello to all ! I'm new to this group. Should I completely give up on my child ever writing ??? He never used to play with toys or do immagitative play or speak and he's doing all of those things ---and a lot ! I'm Annie, mom to Louie, almost 26 and dx'ed at 2 and a half as HFA/AS. He stopped speaking at 2 and didn't start again until he was almost 6, right around the time he potty trained (he doesn't mind my talking about this, BTW). And he didn't write well at all when he was your guy's age; he had trouble with fine motor control, which the OT addressed starting when he was around 5. He still has horrible handwriting (he never conquered script), but then, so does his NT dad....and his dr. LOL Nowadays, he has a part-time job as an assistand church janitor (which just went to three days a week), another as a yardman for a small apartment complex twice a month, and two volunteer gigs: one filling bird feeders and suet stations at a wildlife nature park through the pass from us (we live in Albuquerque), and a new one at a horse ranch, in his words, " shoveling poo. " LOL But he likes it; he likes horses. He's been in assisted living for going on 5 years now, and lives in a restored hacienda across town from us near Old Town (we live in the foothills of the mountains on the east side) with three roomies (all autistic) and a full staff...including a personal aide. He has a 3 room suite, bedroom, what he calls his sitting room, and a full bath (all done in blue Spanish tile). The house is really old, and really beautiful. Someone donated a condo in Taos to the agency that runs his house (and several others), so sometimes they all go up there for the weekend and do stuff. He's very happy, and very busy. My point is, don't give up on your son's handwriting. If nothing else, try teaching him to type and get him a laptop. Our son is a quick one-finger typist on my iMac. And don't believe all the stuff the drs. tell you until you check it out yourself. We were told, when Louie was dx'ed, that we should put him in a home, visit him on weekends, and get on with our lives. That he would likely never speak or be able to care for himself. Obviously, doctors are not fortune tellers! LOL I wish they could have seen him in his new suit, the one he picked out and bought himself with his own money, yesterday. Welcome in, my dear! And to fully introduce myself, I'm almost 58 and have an M.A. in English Lit (n concentration) that I got when I was 53 (I think). I've been married since '74 to the World's Greatest Husband , Ron. He was Louie's advocate and trouble-shooter while I was in college. And can he cook! Louie has a big sis, Kris, who lives outside Seattle and is adult-dx ADD and bipolar. She'll be 37 at the end of this month. And that's us! Glad to know you! Guest guest
They allowed to My son to use an AlphaSmart. He disassembled it. Evidently, something in it wasn't working properly, so he took it apart to see what was wrong. Hmm. When he put it back together...it wouldn't work at all. Guest guest
Annie, thank you for the wonderful encouragement ! It so helps me to hear how our kids do once they reach adulthood. I'm not going to give up on the writing ...but I am thinking about getting him a laptop. Will's OT thinks he must be a two hand typist first to be sufficient on a laptop...and I agree with you that he could be a one finger typist and that can work just fine too ! Thank you so much for your encouraging words ! It sounds like Louie is so happy ...I can only hope so much for my child's future. So happy to meet you ! Guest guest
It is a handheld typing device which students can then hook up to a comp or printer and print out their work. Try Amazon.com. I have seen them on there. They dont come cheap. I have seen them for $300. My sons teacher has one in the class and lets Warren use it so we have not really needed to buy one but I am sure that as middle and high school approaches I may need to invest in one. in Lancaster, Ca Gott <thegotts@...> wrote: , I've not tried an Alpha-Smart ?
