Guest guest
I thought we weren't doctors here. I think it is irresponsible for you to tell someone to get off a medication Jackie. Guest guest
We are not doctors but believe me when I say we know about medication warnings ..Jackie advised stopping the Cymbalta because it has the potential to cause further liver damage . I know of no hepatologist who prescribes something that can potentially be dangerous to a hep c patients liver . Jackie like me has a medical background Re: 8 Down 16 to Go I thought we weren't doctors here. I think it is irresponsible for you to tell someone to get off a medication Jackie. Guest guest
Yes , perhaps my 'wording' was a bit strong but I know MANY hep C patients who have been IMMEDIATELY removed from cymbalta once the doc was advised of the patients having Hep c.. it was recently remarked with the "BLACK BOX WARNING"... If you read the entire post, I told her to "GET IN TOUCH with her doc IMMEDIATELY" and I STAND BY THAT.. Cymbalta is VERY VERY dangerous for those with liver disease... PERIOD... Guest guest
Please read this: What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Cymbalta? • While you are taking Cymbalta you may need to be monitored for worsening symptoms of depression and/or suicidal thoughts at the start of therapy or when doses are changed. This concern about the increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors may be greater if you are 18 years of age or younger and are taking Cymbalta. In patients younger than 18 years, the period of risk may extend beyond start of therapy or when doses are changed. Your doctor may want you to monitor for the following symptoms: anxiety, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, severe restlessness, and mania (mental and/or physical hyperactivity). These symptoms may be associated with the development of worsening symptoms of depression and/or suicidal thoughts or actions. Contact your healthcare provider if you develop any new or worsening mental health symptoms during treatment with Cymbalta. Do not stop taking Cymbalta. • Do not take Cymbalta if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) during the last 2 weeks. Wait at least 5 days after you stop taking Cymbalta before taking a MAOI. Serious, and sometimes fatal, reactions have occurred when these medicines have been used together. Also, do not take Cymbalta if you are taking thioridazine (Mellaril). Dangerous, even fatal irregular heartbeats may occur if these medicines are taken together. You must wait 5 weeks after stopping Cymbalta before taking thioridazine (Mellaril). • Cymbalta may cause liver injury. Talk to your doctor before taking Cymbalta if you have or have had liver problems or drink alcohol regularly. • Tell your doctor about any medications you have been taking, even if you have stopped taking them, before you take Cymbalta. • Talk to your doctor before taking any other medications after you stop taking Cymbalta. • Before taking Cymbalta, tell your doctor if you · have liver disease; · have kidney disease; · narrow angle glaucoma; · have diabetes; · drink alcohol regularly; · have high blood pressure; · suffer from seizures; or · suffer from mania or have suicidal thoughts. • You may not be able to take Cymbalta, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above. • Cymbalta is in the FDA pregnancy category C. Babies exposed to Cymbalta and/or other drugs of the same class during the third trimester of pregnancy may develop medical complications. Discuss the risks with your doctor. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. • Cymbalta passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Do not take Cymbalta without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Guest guest
and this Cymbalta (duloxetine hydrochloride) associated with increased risk of liver injury in patients with chronic liver diseaseImmuneSupport.com10-17-2005 MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program Eli Lilly and FDA notified healthcare professionals of revision to the PRECAUTIONS/Hepatotoxicity section of the prescribing information for Cymbalta (duloxetine hydrochloride), indicated for treatment of major depressive disorder and diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain. Postmarketing reports of hepatic injury (including hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice) suggest that patients with preexisting liver disease who take duloxetine may have an increased risk for further liver damage. The new labeling extends the Precaution against using Cymbalta in patients with substantial alcohol use to include those patients with chronic liver disease. It is recommended that Cymbalta not be administered to patients with any hepatic insufficiency. Read the complete MedWatch 2005 Safety Summary, including links to the Dear Healthcare Professional letter and revised label, at: http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/2005/safety05.htm#Cymbalta Jackie on <redjaxjm@...> wrote: Yes , perhaps my 'wording' was a bit strong but I know MANY hep C patients who have been IMMEDIATELY removed from cymbalta once the doc was advised of the patients having Hep c.. it was recently remarked with the "BLACK BOX WARNING"... Guest guest
and this: FDA Broadens Liver Warning for Cymbalta Patients With Liver Disease May Risk Further Liver Damage, Says FDA By Miranda HittiWebMD Medical News Reviewed By Louise Chang, MDon Monday, October 17, 2005 Oct. 17, 2005 -- The FDA and Eli Lilly and Co. have broadened a warning about possible liver problems with Cymbalta, a drug used to treat depression and pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. "Postmarketing reports of liver injury (including hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice) suggest that patients with pre-existing liver disease who take [Cymbalta] may have an increased risk for further liver damage," says the FDA. Cymbalta's labeling previously noted possible liver problems. The label had warned that "Cymbalta should ordinarily not be prescribed to patients with substantial alcohol use." Now, that warning will read, "Cymbalta should ordinarily not be prescribed to patients with substantial alcohol use or evidence of chronic liver disease," according to a letter to doctors sent by Lilly, Cymbalta's maker. "It is recommended that Cymbalta not be administered to patients with any [liver] insufficiency," says the FDA. Maker's Letter to Doctors About a million people have taken Cymbalta since the drug's approval in 2004, according to Lilly's letter. "Among these, several cases of [liver] injury have been spontaneously reported," states Lilly's letter. "Some of these patients had underlying liver disease. Review of these cases suggests that patients with underlying chronic liver disease may be at increased risk of [liver] toxicity with [Cymbalta]," the letter continues. Lilly is a WebMD sponsor. Symptoms Signs and symptoms of liver damage can include dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), itchiness, abdominal tenderness in the liver area, or unexplained flu-like symptoms. Elevations of liver enzymes may be found on blood tests. Lilly asks that any questions about the warning be directed to Lilly's medical department at (800) Lilly-Rx ((800) 545-5979). Report any Cymbalta side effects to Lilly at (800) Lilly-Rx ((800) 545-5979) or to the FDA's Medwatch program at (800) FDA-1088 ((800) 332-1088) or online at www.fda.gov/medwatch. Guest guest
Well said Jackie. No, we are not doctors here. But we have nurses here, Paramedics, and other health professionals in this group, as well as Hep C survivors who have stood the test of time . We would be remiss in our duty to our members if we did not pass on the information that we have about certain drugs. We do keep ourselves aware of the current drug information. I try as a Hep C survivor, and a Nurse to keep myself full aware of all the contradictions of medications, what effects the liver in what way. There are certain medications I will never take, because I only have one liver. I doubt I will ever get a transplant if I mess up this one. So I am taking the best care possible for the one that I have.
