Guest guest
Hi Stan, There's a lot of talk on the board about saline systems being better than chlorine. But, it is my understanding that a saline system creates its own chlorine, albeit a " natural " chlorine. Why is this any better? Has anyone looked into a UV system? Guest guest
Hello Suzanne, Well, we are actually saline systems. I can't find anything about asthma and saline or toxicity and saline, but I'm open to hear about UV. I've read about it regarding whole house filters but not for pools. Guest guest
Saline is salt water, isn't it? Anyway, I don't much about UV systems. We are about to spend a chunk of money on a whole house water filtration system so my husband probably won't go for converting the pool water this year. This is all I have on UV pool disninfection, but I got it from some company's website. Sounds like it has to be used in conjunction with some chemicals: UV Water Purifiers for Private Swimming Pools and Spas UV water disinfection of private pools and spas is a chemical-free method of killing microorganisms by shortwave ultraviolet light. To ensure a safe and pleasant pool environment without using strong disinfection chemicals, ultraviolet water purification destroys organic pollutants instantly as the water passes through the treatment chamber. The ultraviolet sterilization systems for private pools are particularly suitable for users who are sensitive to the usual swimming pool disinfectants, heavy metals from ionic purifiers or allergic to chlorine. UV water purification advantages: * More pleasant bathing in a very low chemical environment * Dramatically reduced chemical dosing (50% or more) and chemical costs * Possibility of zero-chlorine bathing, using peroxide disinfectants * Unrivalled protection against contamination in swimming pool filter media * Safety-net protection against loss of chemical dosing - real life tests with no dosing for a month proved the pool water still stayed fresh * Instantaneous water disinfection at every pass * Very low power consumption * Economical swimming pool treatment – low purchase and running costs Contact American Air & Water for details of how we can help you to simplify pool maintenance, minimize chemical usage and save your money. --Suzanne On May 18, 2006, at 2:48 PM, mb12 valtrex wrote: > From: " Stan Kurtz " kurtzstan@... > Date: Thu May 18, 2006 2:04pm(PDT) > Subject: Re: About Pool Water/saline vs. chlorine > > Hello Suzanne, > > Well, we are actually saline systems. > > I can't find anything about asthma and saline or toxicity and saline, > but I'm open to hear > about UV. Guest guest
Hi Suzanne, Correct. Typically the whole house ionization systems use UV as the last step... but the water already has salt to replace the ionized metals that are charged into ions and then " bumped " out by the salt... then it gets UV lit to kill any bacteria and then sent through the house and the salt is charcoal filtered at the showers (optional) or reverse osmosis filtered at the kitchen sink. I've never seen UV used in a pool setting. My conceptual concern is if the process of UVing the water in the pool filter is enough to maintain clean water in the entire pool at all times. At least with chlorine or saline you have a sustained amount of the agent in every drop of the pool at the same time. I'll keep my mind open though. I would need some people with UV pools to tell me that it works for them. I do have friends with saline who swear by it. - Stan > > > From: " Stan Kurtz " kurtzstan@... > > Date: Thu May 18, 2006 2:04pm(PDT) > > Subject: Re: About Pool Water/saline vs. chlorine > > > > Hello Suzanne, > > > > Well, we are actually saline systems. > > > > I can't find anything about asthma and saline or toxicity and saline, > > but I'm open to hear > > about UV. Guest guest
Hi Stan, Sorry to beat a dead horse here, but I want to understand why natural chlorine (aka saline or salt-water pool systems) is better than manufactured chlorine (standard pool water). Does the use of a saline system mean you can reduce or eliminate other chemicals typically used to maintain a pool? Do sensitive kids not react to natural chlorine in the same way they would manufactured chlorine?
