Guest guest
I first read of burping the bottles from Margret Pegg's posts, but since she is away, perhaps some of the rest of you who burp your bottles (Graham?!) could clear up this mystery for me. How big is the burp? Do you just barely loosen the bottle cap or loosen until you hear the " phhhttt " ? Or do you loosen the cap entirely? If using corks, do you simply put them in lightly, or do you lift them slightly or completely when burping? With the first batch, I burped the bottles daily and perhaps too thoroughly, as there was no fizz left in a batch that had a nice smooth fizz prior to bottling. Since, I have not burped the bottles at all, some with screw tops and some with EZ tops. All batches have been put into a large heavy-duty painter's bucket with an airtight, leak proof screw-on Gamma Seal lid. (I had read about these explosions here before ever starting and they made a believer of me!) Something that was interesting to me -- and perhaps someone here can address it -- is that on one occasion, enough pressure had built so that the EZ top bottles had leaked a bit of KT which I found under each bottle on the paper towels beneath. The screw tops had not leaked. This made me think the EZ tops would be safer, releasing some pressure if necessary. Evidently, from Joyce's experience, I was wrong. Thank you for your insights -- and Blessings on Your Day! Lois (in the Midsouth)
