Kesha,

You are describing Tyler to a " T " when we put him on Adderall... It was the

worst experience we ever had!!! Not only did it make him act as if he were

on overdrive all the time, he seemed to have looser inhibitions (talking

back, not caring about what anyone else may think, allowing anger to take

over, inability to control his behavior, massive troubles with obsessive and

compulsive behaviors, forgetting things we had just asked him to do or not

to do, etc). He also was much more sensitive to sensory stimulation and

would become hyper and out of control. His behavior became really weird, and

he often said that he didn't know what he was doing wrong or why we thought

it was wrong!!!

We took him off Adderall after three weeks and he crashed, feeling horrible

about how he had been acting but so anxious about still not feeling in

control. Straterra, the medication we tried next, has been a god-send for

us!!! We saw a difference within the first month and he is really good at

remembering to take it on his own (he is almost 15). If he forgets, we/he

notice it within 12-15 hours. His confidence has gone up, he has his

impulses under control, he doesn't become over anxious (unless the situation

is extreme), he has control over his behavior, he isn't threatening suicide

as he was starting to by the end of our run with Adderall, and he is now

calm enough on the medication to where he can actually notice the

actions/reactions of others, and often identifies and responds to them

correctly. He is able to pay attention in class and is consistently on the

honor roll. He is even being given an outstanding academic achievement award

at graduation in 10 days!

Anyway, my advice is this. If he acts that way on the medication, is the

medication really doing that much for you? Wouldn't it be worth trying

something else again to see if perhaps a non-stimulant would work better and

give him more control over his actions/behaviors? I know how hard and

expensive it is to keep switching meds, but it seems like each of these

kiddos is affected differently by different meds (some swear by adderall) as

they are by different therapies. They are so individual that perhaps your

son just hasn't gotten to the one that will make the difference for him!!!

Anyway, I am sure pulling for you! I know that the period with Tyler was

extreme, and we all felt like we were going to end up in the loony bin if we

didn't find something... Thankfully, we finally did!!!

~hugs~

Do AS/HFA children have trouble knowing when they are misbehaving?

My son has been getting in more trouble than usual and when I ask him

why are you misbehaving he says, " I didn't know I was being bad " . His

meds has been increased which he took today and after a while later

he ask me am I acting different am I being good now.

He has been arguing a lot with me an his grandma, talking non stop for

hours practically bouncing off the walls while visiting places he has

never had a problem at before.

Today and yesterday he was riding on a chair that had wheels on it

all through the store he usually does not have a problem wandering

around this store cause it's small and He knows all the workers cause

I have been working there for 7 yrs. I ask him to put the chair back

without riding on it I turn around and he's riding again through the

store.

He does not know when he is misbehaving even though he has been told

numerous times about the same thing most of the time is this common

with AS/HFA children ?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

He was off his meds for about 2 months until yesterday, because no

matter what meds he has tried seems to do nothing right now he takes

Adderall extended capsules, which were increased from 10mg -

20mg which he has only taken yesterday he has taken Concerta also in

the past and nothing seems to help with the impulse control and

hyperactivity but mainly the impulse problems which happens in any

environment the hyperactivity only seems to happen out in public

places. When he is impulsiveness he does some serious dangerous

things that can harm himself/others mostly himself.

My 6yr old son who has Asperger's amd SPD has a horrible time with

impulsivity(part of the ADHD with Asperger's). He has no idea wht he does

the things he does and says once he starts he can't stop himself. A lot of

times he is just needing a lot of sensory inout and not getting it. Do you

have anything in place to help with your son's sensory issues? Riding on the

chair is one.

I know when my son is stressed he will seek sensory things out--running into

walls, knocking on walls, riding on chairs, bouncing on anything he can and

the latest is squealing.

Missy,

You just reminded me of what use to do at 5...he would run across the living room and slam into the arm of the couch, over and over!

He is now 11 and he just got yelled at by the clerk at a local store for sitting in a wing back chair bouncing over and over and over again while I was paying for the stuff.

Actually, this RUDE woman looked over at him and said "WHAT, is wrong with YOU???" "STOP THAT"

I thought I was going lunge over the counter at her! I did not even give her an explanation because she was to ignorant to deserve one, we just walked out and have not (and will not) return to that store again!

Dont you hate that???? You know what I love to do??? Embarass these people by giving them an explanation and watching the guilt of their behavior wash over their face...... They usually end up thinking about it the rest of the day...... designs <scottdesigns@...> wrote:

My son does a lot of this walking into things, jumping up and down

for no reason to me anyway, riding on chair, but no squealing

thankfully and banging on things new thing and falling a lot.

You know, I just can't believe that so many people try

to tell others what to do and be so judgmental!!!

I guess having an AS child, I have been in so many

embarassing and humbling situations that when I see a

child in public misbehaving, I ALWAYS give them the

benefit of the doubt. People who don't have a child

with this problem and who don't work with these kids

seem unable to accept that a neurological difference

can cause these " misbehaviors " .

So far, I've been pretty fortunate that people have

kept their thoughts to themselves. If they ever say

something though, I'd be really hacked and probably

give them a polite earful! ha ha ha

Hang in there,

Sara :)
