As a Californian, I really doubt it has anything to do with a wanderlust or adventurous personality -- I was brought here as a child, by my parents who moved here to get away from the cold east coast, and neither of them had a smidge of ASD. I also know a whole lot of others who'd say that's not their reason either, but it's an interesting theory.

Personally, I think it's a combination between California just being a hugely growing state, and the environment here. My thoughts are that people are genetically pre-disposed to autism, and something pushes their system 'over the edge,' so to speak, into autism. That thing that pushes them over the edge could be environment (the crappy air in many areas here, the high pollen count, the flame-retardant but necessary poison they used to put out the fires in 2003, etc.), pregnancy related (pitocin, mag sulfate, other prescribed meds, etc.) or vaccines. I'm not sure what I feel is the cause in my son -- our pregnancy was very high-risk, I was in the hospital a lot, on a lot of meds, had a pitocin-induced premie birth, our 10 yod is adhd, and I live in an allergy prone area right where the fires started. I also think our water is crap, and the pesticides are used a lot more often than we think.

I forgot to mention, I read that there are many more cases of autism diagnosed in CA than anywhere else, ADD too.

The theory behind all the ADD in CA is that pioneers who went west probably had ADD (I've been in my house for 4 years and it is the longest I have ever lived in one place, but my mom's), since apparently people with ADD are more prone to restlessness, more intelligent and more likely to go off to the "great unknown".

Do you think this might also be a factor in autism cases in CA?

I think ADD is considered to be on the autistic spectrum, right?

Also thanks to all the people who replied to my thimerosal question. Here's my next: How do you chelate metals from your body...is there a supplement like carnosine? I want to see if it helps Tommy, although he is borderline anemic...

Here in Nevada there is only one specialist who deals with ASD kids and there is a year-long waiting list for an appt., AFTER you fill out the packet.

Jill,

Here is a link that will take you to more information on chelation.

Yes some people consider ADD to be on the spectrum but that is not a universal opinion.

Also if your son is borderline anemic you may want to read these links on iron. (The focus on ADD versus Asperger's)
