I found that vit-D interferes with calcium channels of kidneys blocking the

effects of some medications like amlodipine...or perhaps to some degree

Spiro...If you wait another 3 weeks you will know if bp is shooting up

without Spiro or not...but lucky you, 118/78 was when I was 20 !

Max, 62M

| Blood Pressure lower off of Spiro? Why?

|

|I have been off Spiro for 1 week now leading up to an AVS procedure. My

|blood pressure went up for the first couple of days, but now it has settled

at an

|average of 118/78! I ate high salt on Saturday due to my daughter's B-day.

No

|budge on the blood pressure on Sunday or today. This morning my readings

|were 118/78, 108/76, and 112/79.

|

|It seems that my BP has been lower off of Spiro vs when I took 50mg per

day.

|Is there an explanation for this? My diet has been almost exactly the

same. In

|addition to not taking Spiro, I discontinued 1000 IU Vitamin D each day.

|

|I am now wondering why BP is normal. I am wondering if I even have PA at

all.

|Do I still need an AVS? If I have PA, why would my BP be lower off of

Spiro?

|

|When I e-mailed my doctor, he shrugged it off and just told me to be

thankful

|that my BP is controlled off of Spiro. He told me to go through with the

AVS to

|determine if surgery would be a cure.

|

|I am confused and expected BP to skyrocket off of the meds.

Exactly, what do you mean by " vit-D " ?.

Is it serum D, daily oral vitamin D3, Prescription D2?

If u are eating better than u did when BP WAS HIGH then that may be one reason BP IS better esp salt. And the reason we recommend being off Spiro for 4-6 weeks at least is that or hangs around. May your pressure be low!CE Grim MS, MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertensionOn Jul 30, 2012, at 10:41, crzylnebkr <smort@...> wrote:

It was a simple question.

I doubt livestrong.com as a ref to anything.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

We get vit D from sun.

It is Vitamin D3 1000 IU. I was taking one pill every morning. I stopped the

same time I stopped Spiro (last Monday).

I am eating almost the exact same menu. I have been eating pretty well even on

Sprio and keeping Sodium fairly low. I had a lot of salt Saturday and had no

movement in BP. On the Sprio when I had a bad salt day my BP would suffer for 1

to 2 days after.

JW, they tested my Vit D at NIH And Dxed me Hypovitaminosis D when it came back at 18, range 20-50. They explained a couple of things. When the decision to supplement foods they underestimated the requirement. We also tend to spend less time I the sun as a society and many of us are not in an area where sun shines abundantly! When we are in the sun we often use sunscreen, which he encouraged, but that and darker skin color tends to reduce the absorption.

As I understand it, the body stores Vit D so they RXed 50,000UNIT of ergocaliferol (vit d2) weekly for 8 weeks and retest. When level gets to 40 they suggested a maintenance dose of 50,000 every other week or a daily dose to be determined to keep in mid range. I just tested after 8 weeks and it was 23.7 so I have a ways to go! (The wife suggested I take my shirt off and go mow the lawn but with my "Spiro Boobs" I'd probably get arrested!)

Here is a recent article that sheds some light on the subject:

http://www.cardiab.com/content/pdf/1475-2840-11-85.pdf

Hope that helps, I demanded my wife's PCP test her and guess what - she is low too and she loves her flower gardens! (Do I have to teach these doctors everything?)

Dr. Grim, I did not spend a lot of time validating that article since I recognized one of the authors. You may not be aware of it because it hadn't been foun "in your day"! It appears to be relative new if I remember my conversation with Dr. Moriatis and looking t some of the dates. Here is that author and a summry of a follow on that I found when I went to get his info:

Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to several chronic diseases in adults. Studies focusing on children and adolescents, however, are limited. In this randomized cross-sectional study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its relationship with childhood obesity and dietary calcium intake among a population of healthy urban Saudi children and adolescents. To achieve this, 331 randomly selected Saudi children (53.8% females and 46.2% males) aged 6-17 years were included. Demographic, medical, and dietary information were collected; anthropometrics were measured. Levels of serum fasting glucose, lipid profile, 25(OH) D, and for albumin corrected calcium were analyzed. Vitamin D deficiency was noted in all subjects, with girls having significantly lower vitamin D levels than boys. Mean calcium intake was found to be 60% of the required dietary allowance (RDA), while the mean vitamin D intake was 23% of RDA. Vitamin D status and calcium intake were comparable in both normal and overweight/obese children and adolescents. Vitamin D status was highest among children who had calcium intake >800 mg/day. In adolescents there was insignificant but decreasing trend in BMI, which was observed to be highest among those whose calcium intake was <250 mg/day and lowest among those taking >800 mg/day. Conclusion: results from this study suggest the importance of vitamin D fortification and increased dietary calcium in the Saudi diet to meet RDA requirements and avoid onset of vitamin D deficiency-related diseases in Saudi children and adolescents.

Max, I wasn't questioning his qualifications to make such a statement, I was

questioning if it was the best way to get the Vit D when you factored in the

risk of cancer. Dr. Moriatis specifically included that in his discussion with

me.

And I hope your luck continues! As you get further north, you are in

Canada right, the effects are less than if let's say the southern

states. If " all this medical knowledge " includes sunscreens that

reduces the absorbption proces!

BTW, I checked you doctor source and I take back my endorsement. He has

nothing on Pubmed. His facebook site is mostly in a foriegn language.

It looks like he has a radio or tv show. Not sure what his credentials

are.
