Apparently the medical establishment doesn't think we really need our potassium........well I AM sure they don't need my sarcasm either, but oh well they won't die from sarcasm

Hi Dr. Grim and all,Regarding DASHing--what to do when DASHing is clearly recommended for someone who is trying to lower their BMI? I have been advised to try to raise mine, or at the very least not to let it get any lower. When stressed my tendency is to lose my appetite. Dealing with this ongoing health issue has raised my anxiety considerably and this has left me with no appetite, wrecked digestion and I hover barely above 100lbs at 5'1 now. My biggest issue with the DASH diet is I'm starving! I can't eat gluten (celiac disease runs in my family) and I'm trying to maintain/gain weight, not lose it. Any ideas of alternate diets out there that fit someone who isn't trying to lose weight while keeping sodium content down and K up?

I don't know anything about gluten, but a tall glass of chocolate milk and a

peanut butter and banana sandwich at night would likely help. You need the 2-3

servings of dairy. The peanut butter is protein that is needed and the banana

hits another serving of fruit and has some potassium. You can go low sodium on

the bread by getting Ezekiel Low Sodium Bread.

Actually DASH is recommended for no weight change as the DASH studies held weight constant so BP effects would not be due to weight changes.One of the beauties of it is that you can test if you have diet sensitive BP in only 14 days and do not need to lose weight. Monika, I'm celiac (with other food intolerances) too, and so are a few others

on this board. I know all celiacs are different in what we can tolerate - can

you eat gluten-free baked goods and cereal substitutes (I can't; in my case all

grains except for rice give me trouble)? Most are calorically dense, so that

might be your best bet. But check labels as these are processed foods, and as we

all know, processed foods tend to have a lot of hidden sodium.
