Guest guest
Hi everyone,I joined the group a month or so ago, posted a bit but have been a lurker. Now I have a problem so I'm reaching out before I completely loose it. My 13 year old son, , is autistic, in his 6th school in 7 years. He has bipolar as well as Asperger's and sensory issues that are extreme. He's in a special needs class, history of aggressive behavior. I wrote last month regarding unschooling him. I called the school board today regarding withdrawing him from school. My son's behavior in school is declining and the FCAT's (Florida Standarized testing) is coming up in March. He can't handle it. Woman from school board told me that once his withdraws from school and is considered a home schooler his IEP goes out the window. My problem is following their curriculum and taking all these tests. They said he's required to follow the curriculum and he'll have to come in for the tests. He also would not get a HS diploma. I'm waiting for the top ESE guy in my county to return my call. I don't want to pull him from school and spend every day preparing for these exams. It defeats the purpose. The pressure is too much. He was forced to write an essay the other day on why it's important to read. He left it blank. No one gave him the correct prompts and, quite frankly, my son is an excellent reader but has difficult expressing thought or emotion. I don't want to school him at home, I want to unschool him. Huge difference. Can anyone tell me where to look to get info on my state, Florida? I'm so angry right now. My son breezes through these exams in record time, after that he harrasses everyone and can be yelled at by the teacher for hours because he doesn't stop vocalizing about anything. He's also aggressive. They really want my child to have to test in a room of kids with his history? He's in crisis mode (I'm sure you all know what I mean) and he's not going to produce any work. He's tired of being treated like garbage at school everyday and getting him to go has become very difficult. Is is true that the State has the right to force him to fulfill the same curriculum as typical kids, not factoring in his autism and they won't give him a diploma anyway? Hpw can they do this? I already know my son will never drive, I don't know if he'll ever work, but the world will come to an end if he doesn't take the FCAT's and follow this ridiculous curriculum. To top it off they changed his elective today. You don't have a choice and you are stuck with it for month. He got PE today. He hasn't gone in years. It's a nightmare for him. PE alone will flatten his self esteem if it can even get any lower. Please advise and help me calm down. Thanks.Judie
