Guest guest
Looking back I wish I had enjoyed Karac more and not been so intense on the ABA. I remember when we were using shaving soap to teach him to write his letters and when we were out of the room he sprayed out all the shaving soap and he was covered in it so thick that he looked like a snowman. I wish I had laughed and taken a picture instead of getting so irritated. Now he is 18 and doesn't do those crazy things any more. I'll pick him up at 3:10 today to take him to his swimming lessons. He is enjoying the lessons and the instructor is so thrilled with him; she doesn't realize that he already knows how to swim. I'm not telling her because she is getting such joy out of feeling so successful. LOL, LOL, Pat K Prayers  I have continued to pray daily for the following since 2009. Guest guest
That's the reason I tried homeschooling. When he was in the classroom, he continued to regress and developed self injurious behaviors. They called me every day to come pick him up. He was terrified of the kids(but only the ones in the class). The last semester he was there, as soon as we left, he climbed up on the big window air conditioner and stayed until he saw one of our cars through the window. My husband said I couldn't do any worse with him than they did. Looking back now, I wonder if I was wrong. The kids he was with were all put on psychotic drugs early or placed in group homes. The ones in the class have been sent to the regular high school, even though they are still in a self contained classroom. They seem to have adusted to one another and the environment of school and he has adjusted to being here with me, going shopping, working on activities in his playroom. But even at 18, he is so far behind where he should be, doesn't try to communicate(because he never had to). It has been a 10 year long battle of me trying to teach him something and him refusing to learn. He is self willed and obstinate. His older brother, who could do more with him than anyone just moved to another state, and his older sister has Downs Syndrome, and I am lost. We have tried to put him back in school twice. In middle school, he wanted to go, but the school system refused to let him. 2 years ago, I tried again but they sent him to a neighboring town, where the kids were all violent and low functioning and he once again couldn't handle it. Guest guest
, I too am so sorry to hear about and your situation. That is my worst fear. My is 18 and he became self injurious and combattive last year. He is now on abilify for the aggression, klonopin for the anxiety from the abilify, and a lot of vitamins. During this time we found that he had 4 impacted wisdom teeth, which were removed. He hurt both me and his dad during that time. I am 58 and my husband 61. There are only 4 group homes for autistic people in NC. One in Ashville, one in Wilmington, and 2 in Raleigh. The waiting lists are very long. If it is ok, I too will be lifting you up in prayer. Guest guest
It is so great to find someone who has a child with autism about the same age as my son. I feel so lost sometimes. Are there things that have helped him, either emotionally or cognitively? If you feel comfortable I would be interested in knowing about what he is like and the things you do to help him cope. Pat K > Pat, I haven't been on here for quite awhile. I lost my brother in December and my mom is slipping further and further into dementia so I have just been trying to get by each day. Thank you so much for continuing to pray for Ethan and I....he is doing so much better in a lot of ways. He was evaluated by a psychologist last month and he found that Ethan was not in the moderate to severe range of the spectrum but has PDD-NOS and ADHD!! If you recall that's what I thought to start with...I feel a little vindicated! We tried the melatonin to help Ethan get to sleep,it has worked wonders. It also helped to put Ethan and his younger sister in the same bedroom. He no longer gets up in the middle of the night to crawl in my bed or his mom's. He is now wearing his big boy underwear all day long with no accidents but he still will not have a bowel movement in the toilet. He will hold it and ask for a pullup. That's the only time he wears one now, making progress but it's slow. He has regressed in school,he has a new teacher this year and he hasn't connected with her like he did his former teacher. She is a lot less involved with one on one teaching...she said it's too difficult to spend time with the kids individually..there are only three kids in this class with a teacher and an aide and she doesn't have time???? She doesn't send home daily progress reports and rarely sends work home for him to do. ,his mom..my daughter has come a long way too. She has been clean from meth for almost a year now and just made the dean's list in the online classes she's taking. She has taken over the majority of Ethan's care,as it should be,she's the one who request the new evaluation. We are both taking autism classes as well. Ethan's dad is awaiting trial for aggravated assault of a peace officer. He could be facing some serious jail time. He and are still married but she and the kids still live with me. Do I think your prayers have had anything to do with all this??? Absolutely!!! I can't thank you enough for keeping Ethan and my family in your prayers. There have been many times that I wanted to just throw my hands in the air and give up,especially on when we were doing everything for her and her kids and she continued to use drugs. I felt helpless. I gave it to the Lord and trusted in Him to help me see what I needed to do. I love you Pat.Karac is so very lucky to have such a wonderful grandmother in his life....I pray I can be the same for Ethan!
Guest guest
Karac at one time was high functioning. I did ABA with him until he started to school, but the school, the meds, TD, and parents who were unwilling to work with him caused a regression. He is very low functioning at this time and will never be what he was capable of being. I taught him to read, type, use the calculator for math, print, and color, but he has no motivation to do any of those things. In some ways he is very much like a typical teenager. His favorite thing is to just " hang out " . He and I like to hang out together. We ride bikes and swim in the summer. In the fall and Spring I take him to SpiritHorse which is free. He has learned to saddle and unsaddle the horse and ride independently with me close by. He likes music and Lion King. He has functional speech and he loves to eat. He is about 5'10 and weighs 182. He can dribble and shoot a basketball. We are trying to teach him to shave himself. He frequently has anxiety, but he is pretty good at doing what he needs to do to calm down. I have taught him to say, " God help me calm down " . and it is amazing; he usually calms down. I adore him Pat K Prayers  I have continued to pray daily for the following since 2009. Guest guest
Thanks for sharing his story with me. I love the name. You sound like a very good grandmother. can't do many of those things. He has no interest in anything except the computer and listening to music. He is afraid of animals and children. He knows words from all the drills we have done but can't or doesn't see the need to use them to communicate. He has a very self limited diet and at 14 started having self injury, and at 17 aggression. I think I probably have told the rest, maybe more than once. Guest guest
Karac doesn't golf, and he has been bowling several times, but I don't know if he likes it. He is good at dribbling and shooting a basket. He loves jumping on a trampoline and took gymnastics for several years. He won a gold medal for parallel bars in special olympics. He is taking swimming lessons now instead even though he can already swim. He just likes the one on one and swimming in an indoor heated swimming pool.
