Guest guest
My son has been in foster care for a year now. The person in charge takes over the needs of the child. She buys him clothes, etc. I have a good relationship with the foster mom. I am not sure whether you have to try a group home first or not. Guest guest
Yes, I have tried a school which was residential, I found bruising all over him everytime I visited for a month, I took him home. Do you have the therapeutic foster care for your child? How did you get your child in, and do you think that the person is more qualified to take care of him? What state? > > My son has been in foster care for a year now. The person in charge takes over the needs of the child. Guest guest
I have a 16 year old daughter who started with aggression at 13 - we all feel it was brought on with puberty:( I know the "wonderful" doctor at that time was medicating her and suggested a "therapeutic" foster care for her. We are also foster parents so for us/me I didn't get what another home could give her that I couldn't. But then I realized the therapeutic foster cares that they would put her in she would be the only child and they would be able to work with her one-on-one with no distractons. Later we found out though that she was not a candidate for that - she was too aggressive and needed to be in a residential treatment center where she had a doctor on staff/call 24 hours and a changing staff every 8 hours. She is very intense. She is currently in a RTF and they have been wonderful, but they are suggesting she needs a higher level of care so we are fighting with the insurance to move her up. She is not responding to any meds and her progress has been slow and little. They are now suggesting a neuro/bio (???) facility - I'm looking into seeing what they do. I know when we first struggled with Maddie I felt I could take care of her - we went 2 years before I finally admitted I needed help. She has destroyed our house (literally) - holes are in our walls, furniture broken, flooring ripped up, doors tore off, etc. But what made my husband finally tell me she needed help was when she really hurt me:( She was never physically aggressive until 13 - but it got out of control - way out of control. She was also hurting herself to the point where we were afraid she was going to kill herself - if she didn't get her way she would throw herself down steps and the one time she tried to throw herself out her bedroom window:(First - do you have a worker that offers supports/ideas? I know I have two - one is through MR and the other is through the autistic side. They will help guide you through paperwork and applications and help find funding. I do know I have to "push" to get what we need - funding is tight. I know with her residential treatment Maddie does have bruises and marks on her (I saw a previous email from the thread autistic grandparents), but she also had them at home from throwing herself on the floor, down the steps, banging her head off walls, slamming her fist into things, etc. Actually her bruising there is less because they have more staff that can stop her than what I could do. You do have to find a place that you are comfortable with - I called and asked for references and did a tour of the facility before we placed her. We also used a hospital for autistic kids to help prove she needed an RTF for the insurance. They take kids in "crisis" and evaluate for meds/treatment. The usually treatment time is 7 - 21 days. Maddie was there 3 months - they realized she couldn't come home because of the safety issues so they helped fight for the RTF with us.The only other thing I would suggest is looking at diet, sensory, meds, etc. But don't let it get to the point where it is putting you in danger like I did. We have 3 other children and like my husband pointed out to me they were not getting the home they deserved and if she killed me all 4 of them would be without a mother - I was important too:)I wish you luck and will pray for you - it is such a hard decision but I know I had to look what was best for Maddie and for me - I had to face the fact that I can't fix everything:(RhondaFrom: camper356872003 <camper3568@...>autism Sent: Sunday, July 10, 2011 11:23 PMSubject: therapeutic foster care. Guest guest
thanks, you thoughts are so helpful. I just cry sometimes at the thought of placement. I feel so guilty. I know it is going to eventually happen, but after the school thing, I am worried. Please keep in contact, your ideas may help. > > > > I have a 16 year old daughter who started with aggression at 13 - we all feel it was brought on with puberty:( Â I know the " wonderful " doctor at that time was medicating her and suggested a " therapeutic " foster care for her. Guest guest
Hi. My name is Lana. Residential is just horrible. My son was in two groups homes which eventually closed down. The social worker thought he would do better with foster care. The foster mom is great and I really like her. There are two other adults there. I live in Baltimore MD. No matter what state you are in, get a social worker and look into foster care. It is so much better than residential. You can email me at tunick04@... if you wish to chat.
