Guest guest
, My son is on Abilify and we are trying to decrease the dose. One of the side effects is not being able to be still. He was on 10 ml. in the am and 10 in the pm. His is a long story and I won't go into it, but if the ADHD has only been noticable sense he started on the Abilify look at that possibility. Guest guest
Dear I never post anymore, but I felt compelled. My sister who has major depression was put on Abilify and she already was on Effexor. The Abilify helped her depression but oh dear, she said she felt like there were ants living inside of her body. She could not keep still. Moved constantly. It got so bad, she was literally not sleeping. Her doctor noticed that and put her on Wellbutrin. I know that is another anti depressant. However, the side effect of the Abilify totally stopped. She now is on even keel and wonderful to be around. I wish I had known this when my autistic son took Abilify. His aggression became worse, he started picking his skin and moved constantly. Being non verbal unable to tell me how he felt. Poor sweetheart. Thought I would let you know. Take care. Guest guest
Hi Pat, We are having issues with our son. Trying to wean him off of Abilify. Caused parkinsonism for which they gave amantadine. Caused increased anxiety and hyperactivity for which they gave Klonopin. He has now been diagnosed with Osteopenia(rare side effect). The skin is peeling off of his hands and they have given a steroid cream for eczema. Withdrawal is bad so we are going slowly to keep from having returning SI behaviors and aggression. Any suggestions about what can help this? He has lost 20 lbs. since June. Part of the weight from the Abilify. He is 5'9" and only weighs 130 lbs. The doctor has suggested replacing Abilify with Zyprexa which seems to be worse about weight gain and diabetes. Since we have a strong family history of diabetes, I am trying to prevent this if possible. I have read that the melatonin stops working unless you take a break from it. 5 days on 2 days off. I found a sleep med. at the health food store that works like a charm. Taste horrible and looks like pureed grass. Made by buried treasure. It also has melatonin, but some other things as well. We don't have a lot of problems with sleep anymore, unless you count not wanting to go to bed until midnight. When we do it is usually a stomach issue. Guest guest
Did she stop the Abilify or the Effexor or just add the Wellbutrin? Wonder what the difference was? My son is also non verbal. What happened with your son who was on Abilify? This situation has almost made my husband a basket case. I would trade the Abilify for an antidepressant in a heartbeat. Was it a psych doctor that did this? I wish I could find a doctor who knew what they were doing. Thanks for this input. Hi all, At just turned 7 year old son Isaiah is not sleeping through the night. Guest guest
The Wellbutrin was added. She needed the other meds as well. However the Wellbutrin was a God sent for the constant feeling like her body was crawling with just the Abilify and Effexor. Yes she was under the care of a psych. Our son who is 21 was on 17 different meds before the age of 15. Abilify was the last one. He goes to a school for autistic children and does not live with us. I have never consented to anymore meds because he ALWAYS got worse. by that I mean his aggression and impulse control. we are now faced with him exiting the school and placement in adult home. because of his aggression the local adult home is reluctant. it takes about 4 adults to help him get control once he goes into an aggression. we live in Kansas in a rural community. Currently he lives in Wichita. I am very worried that we will not find an adult placement that can handle him. I do know I will not consent to the medical route again. never found anything that would help him. so sad. God bless you. Guest guest
I am so sorry. we went through all that with Karac. We finally took him off of all Meds. It was hell. the Zyprexa might help temporarily but not as a permanent solution. Clonidine was the only med that helped Karac without horrendous side effects, and we only used that per need. I will be interested in how things work out for you. Pat KSent from my iPadOn Nov 11, 2011, at 7:36 AM, drissia wright <ritzywright@... Hi Pat, We are having issues with our son. Guest guest
I am so sorry. Thank you for sharing that story. When I am feeling sorry for myself I always find someone who has it worse than me. My son was diagnosed at 6 after having a bad reaction to a vaccine at 4. He has severe autism, is non verbal, and has severe sensory issues. He is currently in music therapy and speech therapy to learn the dynavox. He has had a multitude of workers, but only a couple who were worth a dime. Has never been able to stay in school. I quit my job to stay home with him and homeschool him. His dad said I couldn't be any worse than the school system. He took Lexapro when he was 12 or so. We went through a lot of years of intermittent headbanging and aggression; mostly pinching, pulling hair out by the roots, and biting. When he was 17 he started having worse episodes. Needed 4 impacted wisdom teeth out. He was having meltdowns that looked like temporal lobe seizures. They couldn't find anything. Tried Risperdal for the rages; then Abilify; Klonopin for side effects; then Amantadine for Tarkive Dyskinesia. They said it was either drugs or placement. I figured they would just put him on drugs anyway, so the last year or two have been "take one day at a time" until we can find another solution. Hope you find a place for him where he will be happy and they will know what to do with him. Drissia Hi all, At just turned 7 year old son Isaiah is not sleeping through the night. Guest guest
Pat, I have a question. How did you manage to get Karac off of the zyprexa. My son takes Abilify and we have been trying to get him off it for a year. He has gone from 25 mg to 6 a day. But can't seem to get any further than that. He is also taking Klonapin for anxiety and Amantadine for the side effects of the Abilify. Problem is each of these have a withdrawal component of their own when you try to reduce it. The neurophys. he is going to now admits that Abilify is one of the milder in its class and he is continuing to exhibit symptoms of tarkive dyskenisia. This guy wants to switch over to Zyprexa and that doesn't make sense to me if it is the same class of drugs. Can you give me any clarification? What would you do? I am desperate. Guest guest
thanks Pat, So going from Abilify to Zyprexa would be going in the wrong direction. He has an aggression problem on the Abilify. I have heard that CLO is beneficial when trying to detox from psychotic meds. Did you give anything like that? I hear of people doing this but don't know how they accomplish it. Everytime I go down on the Abilify he kind of melts down. The doc is saying it is because he needs it. I don't think so. No more than someone needs opium because they are in withdrawal. Drissia Hi all, At just turned 7 year old son Isaiah is not sleeping through the night. Last night proved to be no different. Isaiah will go to sleep after we've given him Clonidine (prescribed by his psychiatrist) and then Melatonin. But then at 1am, 2am, 3am and so on, he is up and tearing through the house. He'll raid the fridge and help himself to things while making major messes. He'll also make so much noise that it wakes us up. His siblings manage to sleep through the night, but me and DH don't. This is a colossal nightmare for me. We don't see the psychiatrist until September 27th and until then, we can't have anything changed. Has anyone gone through this??? What can we do? DH and I both work full time and for what I do, I have to have my sleep..Isaiah currently takes Abilify 5mg a day in the morning and then 2 tabs of Clonidine at night. I have another friend who suggested that maybe the Melatonin is not as effective and that we should try Benadryl for a week to get him sleepy. When we've given him the Melatonin, We have given him up to 10mg. Isaiah used to be on Risperdal for almost 3 years and this past summer we had it changed. The biggest thing was that Isaiah was starting to be aggressive and now the concern is that he may have ADHD issues. He can't sit still to save his life and this is alarming.I'm also starting to lose it because of the lack of proper sleep. Can anyone help me???Thanks,

Guest guest
Cod Liver Oil. When they see something isn't doing what they thought why do they just keeping adding more stuff for them to be able to tolerate it anyway. Was there aggression with the Zyprexa. We started with Risperdal which made the aggression worse, then Abilify, then they added Klonopin for the tremors and anxiety from that and most of the aggression went away. Then they gave prozac and we thought he was losing his mind and I took the prozac away myself. So we changed doctors who said there was no reason for him to be on that class of meds and gave him the Amantadine(anti-parkinson's and antiviral) but we haven't been able to get him off of the abilify without reverting to aggression which my poor husband can't handle. In the middle of all of this, he has IBS and can't take the med's that the doc prescribed. They shut down his kidneys. The teacch folks here in nc and others want us to put him in a group home. Guest guest
JJ takes a small dose of resperdal and a small dose of zpraxa. I hate to have him on any meds and I never did until he hit puberity BUT when he hit puberity he started hitting. Zpraxa is the only drug that helps JJ with agression. He is 24 now and lives at home with me and his dad. He go's to a day program while I work. When he gets upset he hits at me. He loves us to death but I am the on that gets it when he is upset.I can't have him hitting me so he stays on a small dose of zpraxa. Albiify didn't help him at all. Guest guest
Lois, Thanks. I have done a lot of research on Zyprexa and didn't find much good. I don't want to go to something worse than what he is on. We started with Risperdal and he went from being zombielike to raging with no middle ground. Then we went to Abilify and the side effects have been horrible. The rages never stopped either, just slowed down some. This doc continues to want to try Zyprexa, but I am so afraid of all of these meds and what they will do to him. On the other hand, my husband is bearing the brunt of the abuse. A while back he head butted me in the chest and the doc referred to it as deep tissue bruising. No broken bones and almost broke my hand. He is very strong to be 124 lbs. He is so sweet except when he rages and there don't seem to be any triggers unless it is the frustration of the computer not doing what he wants. It always seems to happen when he is in front of the computer or has been there for a long time. Ever since he hurt me his dad won't leave me and him alone except to go to work. "The episodes" of sib and rage seem to be at night all the time. Drissia Hi all, At just turned 7 year old son Isaiah is not sleeping through the night. Last night proved to be no different. Guest guest
Hi Drissia, My son has been on most of the meds out there over the last 8 years. Things turned when he started puberty and became very bad with SIB and aggression. The Zyprexa made him more of a zombie and also had some very strange side effects. Risperdal worked for a while but when we tried to increase it, we too experienced a major increase in behaviors. He currently is taking Abilify and Lamotrigine (Lamictal) in small divided doses. He was on 5mg of Abilify but that was causing him some anxiety and increasing it made matters worse. So, I decreased it to 2.5 mg and give it to him in divided doses. He receives 1/2 in the morning and the rest at lunch along with divided doses of Lamotrigine. The Lamotrigine was causing problems in the beginning when given as a single dose. We tried the brand name Lamictal timed released version but that did not work. We then returned to the generic Lamotrigine and I give it to him in five doses. He takes a total of about 62mg of Lamotringine. Once the pharmacy gave us a different generic manfactured by someone else and I could tell the difference in a day. So, after much trial and error, we have found something that works for us that requires a little more effort but worth it. When he does has issues, and they still happen, most are in the middle of the night. He will just wake up upset or raging and I try to have a snack on hand, his therapy ball to bounce on and a tape recorder. It has helped him to transfer his thoughts that are upsetting him to a tape. Putting these thoughts somewhere else helps him "release" them from his brain. The snack is a distraction and also may help with some possibly low blood sugar. We put on quiet music on the TV and hopefully, I am in time to nip it before any esclation occurs. He is a big strong 21 year old. Hope you find some relief soon. He has always had issues sleeping since he was small so when we sleep thru the night it is big deal!! Good luck. Can anyone help me???Thanks,
Guest guest
Lois, I guess I am trying to decide whether to give zyprexa a shot. I know something has to be done. I know I don't want the end result to be placement for him. I know there is some physical problem but right now we can't let him hurt himself or someone else. I would prefer to see a specialist in treating autism biomedically, to do behavior modification(but am unlearned in that area) and to find a system of communication he can use to tell us what he is feeling. We are working on that but when we show him pictures of feelings he becomes frustrated and always points to the starving picture or the angry picture. We don't understand what he has to be angry about, unless it is because he can't communicate with us. We tried school and it was so bad that he couldn't handle it and we pulled him out. I know he needs a better companion than me, but his only brother has moved away and they have no social gatherings for kids not in school. He takes music therapy, speech therapy, and recently movement and music which we refer to as dance. We would gladly give him ot, pt, or equestrian therapy if we could find someone to take him at his age. All I hear is he is over 18. Yesterday I called a g.i. doc who has been seeing him since he was 10 and they told me we needed to find an adult GI because he was over 18 and they are pediatrics. His dad is 62 and I am 60. We will only be able to keep him at home a few more years unless things change. The idea of group home placement brings both of us to tears. Drugs are not our first choice but if they can keep him stable for us to try other things and keep on looking for help, then we want the best choice in that too. If it is the zyprexa, so be it. I know it isn't the Abilify. I have read patient reviews that say it's like something is crawling around in your gut night and day. I can't imagine what it would be like to have to face every day like that. No wonder it takes Klonopin to keep him calm. Thank you for opening a door for me to vent. Hi all, At just turned 7 year old son Isaiah is not sleeping through the night.
