Guest guest
Yes, we have been through this experience, but I don't have to tell you that these kids are so different in their reactions to Meds. the Abilify made Karac so aggressivebthat he had to be hospitalized. melotonin did not work at all. clonidine worked for a while and then it interfered with sleep. Xanax worked for a wile and then it caused aggression. now he is 19 and not on anything and he sleeps through the night and has been since we took him off all Meds. That has just been our experience.I understand how painful that is and I'm sorry I don't have the answer for you. DH and I both work full time and for what I do, I have to have my sleep. .. Isaiah currently takes Abilify 5mg a day in the morning and then 2 tabs of Clonidine at night. I have another friend who suggested that maybe the Melatonin is not as effective and that we should try Benadryl for a week to get him sleepy. When we've given him the Melatonin, We have given him up to 10mg. Isaiah used to be on Risperdal for almost 3 years and this past summer we had it changed. The biggest thing was that Isaiah was starting to be aggressive and now the concern is that he may have ADHD issues. He can't sit still to save his life and this is alarming. Guest guest
My son is 8 and has the same problem with sleep. He is on Clonidine at night too....but having a hard time stayin asleep. I did give benadryl for a while to help and that did work. Now I give him Delysum for allergies/sinuses (the night time stuff) along with clonidine and it has worked also. I can not give him Benadryl too many days in a row or he gets angry. I also have a rule that he must stay in bed or in his room and either read books or watch his dvd player but he has to be qiet....untill the sun comes up. Then he can leave his room. Sometimes works....it's the being quiet that sometimes does not. I also put a babygate up so he can not leave his room...again sometimes it works and wometimes not. I know what it's lke to be sleepdeprived as I am a single mom. Not fun! Sandy Hi all, At just turned 7 year old son Isaiah is not sleeping through the night. Last night proved to be no different. Guest guest
Your doctor may want to try Trazadone. It helped my son, for a while. Later on, we tried Ativan. It worked the best -- in the system quickly, wears off in about 4-6 hours. Hello everyone, I haven't posted in ages. is now 25 and living in San in a group home. I am in the process of trying to move him to Arkansas, to be near us. The paperwork is horrendous, but we are getting there, slowly but surely. I am working as a caregiver with children with autism and I love it. Hi Pat! > > Hi all, > > My just turned 7 year old son Isaiah is not sleeping through the night. Guest guest
My son stopped having sleep problems with a calcium/magnesium supplement. Now I give him a liquid version before bed and he loves it.
Guest guest
We use Bluebonnet liquid calcium with magnesium citrate and vitamin D3. It comes in different flavors -- my son likes the mixed berry flavor. It is also gluten free and milk free.

That has just been our experience. I understand how painful that is and I'm sorry I don't have the answer for you. Guest guest
, Just read this thread all the way through. Does he drink milk? When my son was younger, he had a real problem with milk. Earlier in his life, he had been nursed, then placed on formula, then soy milk. Back then the soy formula was genetically engineered. After the autism took over, every time he drank milk, he had the stay awake all night laughing or go to sleep and wake up in 2 hours syndrome. Just a thought. Later, he developed such an aversion to milk that he refused to drink it any more. Now every time he sees milk he starts to gag. Over the years, he has had spells of staying awake all night tied to allergies and acid reflux. If he has any stomach issues, I might suspect acid reflux. Guest guest
na, One of the most common side effects of the abilify is that you can't be still. They had to give my son klonopin to counteract the effects of the abilify. They tried prozac which intensified the side effects of the Abilify. Then they gave him Amantadine to counteract the parkinsonism caused by the Abilify. We have now reduced the Abilify by half and things are calming down a little. He is 19 and was taking 20mg a day. Sometimes these kids just don't need so much of this stuff. Drissia Hi all, At just turned 7 year old son Isaiah is not sleeping through the night. Last night proved to be no different. Guest guest
I agree. My son is only taking 5mg of Abilify and I divide that dose for a.m. and 5 p.m. When hetook the total dose in the a.m. he was restless and at times it would escalate. He also takes Lamotrigine in divided doses. The Dr. wanted us to up the Abilify in the beginning but then after dividing thedose, we decided to stay with the current 5mg. The pharmacy changed the generic versionof Lamotrigine (Lamictal) one time and we had another a bad response to that. He also tried the XR ofthe name brand Lamictal and that too had some undesired side effects. So you have to find what works and make sure the pharmacy doesn't switch suppliers on you. He takes 50mg total of Lamotrigine but I divide it into four doses and so far (except for our always sleep issues and somegut problems) behavior is much better and the chance of reaction is lessen with lower doses.
