Guest guest
Yes my daughter does have OCD. I don't think the cutting started because of the OCD though....at least not from what she has told me about why she started cutting. But...in my opinion....and I can certainly be wrong......but maybe the OCD contributed to it becoming a ritual in the beginning....maybe?? I don't know. I just know that from meeting other parents of kids that self mutilate....most of the kids do have OCD.....but not all. But I do know for sure...from all that I have learned..... that it became an uncontrollable addiction as strong as a heroine addict. She would find all kinds of reasons to have to cut several times a day. She has also told me that when she'd try to go to sleep (which she has ALWAYS had trouble doing)....that she would get so mad cause she'd be really tired but just can't fall asleep. She says she can't stop her brain from thinking annoying things....so to distract the thoughts...she'd cut. So to me it kind of sounds like she may be having OCD-type thoughts going on that she can't stop....and then cuts. So I'm not sure that OCD and cutting are " related " ...but I think the OCD contributes to cutting. Does that make sense? But like I said....this is all my personal opinion. /CA In a message dated 6/3/2006 7:07:56 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, julieaw66@... writes: My son is a picker and will scratch himself too. This is one of those things that really drives me crazy. He has scabs all over his arms and legs. I worry about him getting an infection. Guest guest
, I might have already passed this on to you before, but here's a good article (down below) on skin-picking. I never say OCD can't be involved in things, but I think with the " spectrum " of disorders that seem common/co-morbid for people to have together, that they can be considered separate (OCD and picking, etc.). I'm sure with the " urges " (whether a feeling of anxiety or just some feeling of " need to do " ), it can be hard to distinguish the " why " of what they are doing. I know with that at one time I was trying to decide if certain things he did were maybe tics or some OCD ritual/move. And reading about tics and what people feel sometimes with those, it certainly seems hard to distinguish between the two when questioning the sufferer (at least in 's case!). Anyway, some articles: http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/SkinPicking.html Above is from this page of articles: http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/Articles.html Also a good one: http://www.ocdla.com/compulsiveskinpicking.html > He says he doesn't want to do it - that it's ocd.
