Guest guest
Sheree, I just have to say that like so many other moms who have vented here, you sound very special and patient and understanding. Things will get better. My heart goes out to you and all the other amazing moms who write in. My son hasn't been real bad yet but I know it could happen and I just hope I will be as brave if it does. He has been on so many medication combos that I can't even begin. Some we stuck with it through the worst of the side affects and others we gave up on early due to the severity of the side affects. We have been trying to get the meds right since he was in kindergarten. My son is right now on .10mg of Risperdal and 10 mg Lexapro. He has been on the risperdal for a long time now but we changed his Paxil to Lexapro. He is on around the 8th week. Since he has been on the meds he has developed tic such as eye blinking, funny jesters with finger around mouth and now he is constantly thinking of cuss words and keeps saying them out loud ( Tourette like symptoms). He has not displayed this type of symptoms before so I am assuming it is from the medication. For a few weeks the meds seem to be working some. He wasn't obsessing as much and was able to relax a little. He was more hyper though. Then he started to put on weight. He has gained 15 to 20 pounds in the eight weeks. Well, the last few weeks his OCD has been terrible. The Tourette symptoms showed up worse and he is hyper, argumentative and defiant. He has this rule that if someone doesn't take care of a problem then he has to take care of it. Well, this kid today called another kid in the class a name ( really ugly name). Hayden went and told his teacher. The teacher has just got back from a two hour stressful meeting and wasn't in a good mood. She told Hayden she would take care of it and to sit down. He didn't feel like she cared so he went up to the boy who called his friend a bad name and told him to quit calling his friend names and that he was the ( bad word). Well, this ticked the teacher off and she sent him to the office. He was going to be in a talent show today which is a BIG DEAL due to his anxiety problem. I think this too has been making him edgy because his anxiety was sky rocketed due to the stress. Well, she told him that he couldn't be in the program due to his disrespecting the teacher. Though I like he is learning his lesson I also feel bad, because he really is having a hard time. This was really his last chance to do the talent show because he is going into fifth grade. By the way, he has only been going to this school for three month because we just moved here. I am not making excuses, but I feel SO BAD and I HATE HATE HATE this OCD and how it controls him. There is only 1 week of school left, and It is been a nightmare! Thanks for letting me vent! I am starting to feel sick from all the stress. Thanks for listening! Guest guest
Sheree, I'm sorry to hear that things are still so rough for you and Hayden. I wish that I had some words of advice or help to offer, but the best I can do right now is send positive thoughts your way and tell you that Hayden is lucky to has a mom who keeps on fighting OCD with him. Hopefully things will calm down once school lets out and your family settles into your new home. My OCD really spiked both times we moved (twice in four years) and oddly enough, it wasn't right at the time of the move, but a few months later. I hope your trip out to Colorado is productive and rewarding. Please keep us posted! Renae just need to vent. I am starting to really feel helpless with fighting OCD. Guest guest
Thank you guys so much for all the encouragement. We went to see the med. doctor today. His actual med. doctor is out of the country right now on a person trip. I met with the doctor she shares the office with. He is actually listed on the OCD foundation web site. He listened to a quick run down of Hayden and his med problems. He looked mystified. Hayden stumps all the doctors. He decided to take Hayden off of all his meds. He said the dosages were so low that we could just quit them tonight. He said that our doctor would be back in a few weeks and the meds would be completely out of his system. He felt she was going to have to spend a lot of time with Hayden, because his problem was so complex. SO......... here we go again. I asked the nurse who helps with the doctor if she wanted to spend the next week with him. HA. He is going to drive me crazy. I am just so scared for him. I can tell the stress is really starting to affect me. I feel like I just want to sleep all the time to escape it. I just love him SO MUCH and I can't help him! The doctor also wrote a note that Hayden would not return back to school the rest of the year. There is only four days left. At least the stress of the school calling me is of my chest. Please just pray for us! Sheree

At least I know my kids never actually 'do' anything productive. You mentioned that the doctor said his med doses were " so low you can just quit them tonight " -- if they were that low, do you think they were high enough to have any effect on him at all? LT Well, That is a good question but so far he has NEVER been able to get past that dosage in any SSRI medication. He has such bad side affects on the low dosage that you can't raise the dosage any more. He has been on Lexapro for 6 weeks with them raising the medication 5 mg every three weeks. At this dosage he is already blinking his eyes and etc non stop which he wasn't doing until we stared the medication. We have waited some meds out all the way to twelve weeks, and he just gets worse and worse. The doctors don't understand it either? I think the new doctors are going to just take him off the meds and see what he is like with out them and then go from there. UGH This is been going on for over five years. I am looking for a fresh answer! Sheree

I am looking for a fresh answer! Sheree I don't blame you for branching out after all you've been through (and your son, too.) It's so scary when you're dealing with your kid's brain!!! It really seems to be a " shoot the wad & see what happens " sort of deal. I know it can be especially frustrating when your child doesn't seem to " fit the mold " -- that really throws the so called 'experts' for a loop!
