How old is he? Has he been seen by a neurologist?Heidi combative behaviors

Our son has become increasingly combative and destructive this last year. We have had to replace the drywall in his room because he keeps knocking it out with his head. He's destroyed 4 sofas. He has scratched, punched, pinched and spat on me. is on several medications to control his behavior. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

It could even be the meds. Our son got less agitated when we took him off the Concerta.

Kate,

A combination of Depakote and Zyprexa is what we're trying. Last year my son was hospitalized. We think his meds agitated him.

Melatonin was my " go to " when Joe was becoming agitated and forceful.  I ground up 3 mg of melatonin and put in a juice....

It is calming.

No ADHD  medication?

How old is your son?

Joe is 8.5

Kate,

Before (10 yrs) had the "meltdown" he was on Risperdal and Lexapro. Two or three sleepless nights during that time, we added melatonin to try to get him to sleep. It did not work. Admitted him to children's psych ward. They tried Daytrana and melatonin (cut off Risperdal and Lexapro) but those didn't seem to work either. They thought he might have been having mini seizures but couldn't test him.

Now we are on watch and see mode. I guess Depakote and Zyprexa is a better combination. However, my skinny guy has suddenly become my big pudgy guy due to the meds. ---Lb in Sac, CA

We had the same issue with respridol.  2 summers ago we tried respridol and Joe gained 30 pounds in 4 months.  We stopped the respridol and Joe's weight rebounded.  The weight gain was 1 issue, but we had little positive effect on respridol.

I admire you for the psyche ward admission.

Last spring / summer Joe and i were in crisis.  Joe's aggressive tantrums and destructive behavior were beyond anything I had ever imagined.  Somehow / some way...Joe matured and we have been on a good run....but autism is a roller coaster...1 step forward - 2 steps back....

Kate,

It was difficult making that psych ward decision. We were out of our minds; hard to see my guy cry/giggle/try to poke our eyes/topple things non-stop. A family doctor said it would be better if he is watched in a hospital setting where there'd be experienced people. It was hard to leave him there. The place was full of troubled kids. He had to have his own wing or with little kids (which was sad on its own). And they really don't "treat" autistic kids (since it's not a mental illness). It's a scary roller coaster sometimes... will be 15 in May and he is being treated by the doctors at the Bingham

clinic. Before that he was seen by the Weiskoff Child Evaluation Center. Some

medications he used before have made him huge. He's also nonverbal.'s very

severe and also MR/DD makes treatment difficult.

I am so tired my son is now 16 and has gave me a run for my money. I have had 2 sleepless nights, along with fighting , biting, pinching, head butting, scratching and I am worn out. Last night I was on my witts ends and started to take him to the hospital and let them do whatever needed to be done. He is on several meds. So now hes asleep and I am up pulling my hair out as to what actions I need to take before I lose my mind. he fighting kids onthe school bus and then acts as if its not a big deal. hes nonverbal but he understands . I never knew the road would be this rough. I am considering thinking abotu a group home setting or something. I am getting older and since 3 yrs old up until now I need a break to catch my breath. But guilt keeps creeping up when I even think about having him removed from the home.

First off, no matter what you decide - don't feel guilty. Everyone has to do what is best not only for their child, but what is also best for themself and the remainder of the family. Maddie is in an RTF right now and I struggled before I was finally pursued to do that. I felt "guilty". But then my husband came to me - I wasn't making Maddie any better . . . she was miserable and so was I. My marriage was non-existent even though we resided in the same home, I wasn't a wife, mother to my other kids, daughter, sister or friend. My life was solely trying to keep Maddie safe and do as little damage to our house as possible. My faith and relationship with

Christ is a big part of my (our) life; I know one morning my husband came to me and said we needed to talk. I started to get defensive because I knew he wanted Maddie sent where she could get help; to me that was the easy way out and I would have failed. He explained that the kids and he missed me - they missed the meals I used to cook, the help I gave with homework, the devotions, time just talking, etc. Then he looked at me and said it's like I was dead. I was there, but "me" wasn't. He said he really didn't feel it was God's plan for us to be so miserable and if there were places that could help Maddie we would be stronger as a family. She was admitted last November. I know where we have her now is good, but they just told me they don't think they can help her. She needs a more restrictive environment so they are recommending some places and will help move her. But I do feel good about our

decision. I'm still mom to Maddie and I know we have the best we can get her, plus I'm mom, wife, etc. to everyone else - I'm me again. Have you thought of an RTF instead of a group home? There they are trying to get her meds stable and therapy so she can come back home. We know the possibility of her going to a group home, but we know we are working toward getting her home first.

I'm sorry that you're having trouble with your son, but thank you for posting

about it. I now drive my son to school because he would refuse to get off the

bus, and he also hit the Bus Driver and aide. Everyone offers me platitudes.

" You sure have your hands full " " Oh he's just a teenager " are a few of my

favorites. Until you posted your reply, I really thought maybe my kid was the

only one behaving this bad. We live in such a rural area, I feel very isolated.

I'll keep you and your son in my thoughts and prayers.

I think you should try a group home or foster care. I had to put my son in a group home when he was 15 or we were going to be evicted from our apartment. He is now in foster care and doing great. If you have any questions, just ask.

So Sorry for your situation. Riding the bus can be difficult for even typical kids for many reasons. My son rode the bus happily for many years but at age 10 just could not handle it and the anxiety over it really bled over into all other areas. Once I started taking him to school and picking him up his behavior and anxiety immediately improved. Kim Sent from the KFree iPhoneOn Apr 11, 2011, at 11:30 AM, "rfjmlj61" <rfjmlj61@...> wrote:

Please read my earlier posts on neurofeedback. It has made a huge difference in

my son's aggressive, destructive and self-injurious behavior.

The meds only worked for a while. Luckily I found neurotherapy when we were at

the end of our rope. ABA also contributed as well as a deliberate effort to

make our home calmer. Consistency between home and school also was very

important.
