Have you tried medication?  My son (6) was very aggressive and physical. Clonodine changed everything and we are better.

My daughter started out with mild problems and over the years, things got

worse..At the age of 7, I had to place her in a psychiatric unit of a hospital,

she was released after 3 weeks..since, she has been in three others and that

seems b/c her meds stop working..They usually take them off the meds so they

can fully evaluate them..My daughter is now 16 and still has problems, but I

have learned to deal with them..As the other one said, there are also

residential places you can put children and they do good in them..I wish you

luck and hope you get help for him ...

Kate, this is very hard when they are non-verbal and they act out.

Have you been using PEC's? Picture exchange System? or some sign lang?

Breaking that communication barrier helps with behaviors.

We hired a Behavioral Spec. to help us at home and at school.

School took care of their $ portion. It was written in the IEP.

recommend www.bacb.com and find a good Board Certified Behavioral Analyst

near you.

My heart truly goes out to you...I echo some of the other replies about

medication. I would truly recommend that you consider medicine for him. My

daughter takes Ritalin and it has worked miracles for us. She's becoming more

emotional lately and tempermental but the ritalin really bites the edge off of

her behavior. I would hate for you to have to put your son in a home but as a

Mom, you gotta do what's best for your son and for the rest of the family. Is

his Dad in his life? Are there any relatives or friends who can give you a break

and keep him for awhile?

Dear Ola, I have a younger brother on the Autism Spectrum with severe learning

difficulties and behavioural problems. He has been in special needs schools for

most of his life, and since his early teens he's been in residential schools.

Initially he was at a school where he stayed during weekdays and came home for

the weekend, but he later moved into a 365 days residential school. We brought

him home regularly and this was incredibly beneficial for both my brother and

our family. Unfortunately in the UK there aren't many residential colleges where

young adults can go to so now that he is 20 he has finally moved into a

residential home. Once again we bring him home and visit him regularly. He was

also very violent as a child, but is taking medication which helps keep him calm

and this was made possible by the school he was at.

As your son is 11, it might be better for him to attend a residential school

rather than move into a care home. You should speak to your social worker about

this and they would be able to discuss this with you in detail and inform you of

your options.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Ola,

I truly hope that you can find a solution that fits you and your family's needs

right now. Aggression, violence and impulsive behavior can be grueling to deal

with on a daily basis and no one knows it more than those of us who have / are

living it. I am a mom as well,son is 14yrs old autistic,mostly non-verbal. We

have been using RPM (Rapid Prompting Method) for a few years now and I have

struggled off and on with my son's aggression, impulsiveness,OCD's and have tried

different meds.

In the end you have to make a decision that will provide him the best

opportunity to get this under control. I have seen to many families that have

grown children ,bigger than they are ,who are beyond aggressive and are violent

to the point where someone can really get seriously injured. I don't stand in

judgement of these families but can't help but think what would their child be

like had they addressed this when their child was younger.

To add,I think we can all agree that without a form of dependable communication

there has to be a level of frustration however, try to look at the behaviors and

lack of communication separately because it really is. There are many

children, adults who use alternative methods to communicate that still struggle

with their emotions , obsessive thoughts and behaviors and impulsivity. Emotions

have a strong emotional component and for some it can be completely overwhelming

to them and the inability to control their impulses come with that. The

reactions (ie behavior) should be the primary focus . Interpreting what one's

emotions are is something that takes a while for most autistics to communicate.

Having a device is not something that is likely to be an immediate remedy to the

situation because he must learn how to use it but most importantly learn to

communicate. Typing and Communication are also two separate things and typing

on a speech device requires a skill set that may take time and practice so in

the meantime your child needs intervention to deal with his impulsive behavior

because safety is an issue.

HTH,

Stacey

Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) is an educational method that can be applied with

individuals across the autism spectrum as well as others who have conditions

similar to autism.

It begins with choices, then use of a stencil letterboard to independently spell

their responses and eventually progresses the student to either handwrite or

type independently. This was created by a mother, Soma Mukhopadhyay. Her son

Tito ,who would be considered severely autistic, is a published poet and author

of 3 books.

If you don't have high blood pressure, is Clonodine out of the question. My son's blood pressure is low except when he has a melt down or anxiety, then it goes to 140/115 or so.

My son does not have high blood pressure - Blood pressure is fine. Clonidine - we have it compounded into a flavored liquid. For my son, the Clonidine has made a huge & positive difference

We just gave the clonidine to Karac when he was about to have a meltdown, as soon as he would get agitated. Sent from my iPadOn May 2, 2012, at 11:59 AM, drissia wright <ritzywright@...> wrote:

Did it work well? There is no warning with these meltdowns. He seems ok one minute and the next he is mashing his face into an electronic screen. By then it is too late. It is a matter of just surviving the episode. He scratches, pinches, kicks and bites. At least he doesn't head butt us anymore.

What else did you use for these behaviors. The doctor has diagnosed it as explosive rage, but there is no reason for it. There is nothing going on he should be upset about.

Clonidine comes as a patch.  The patch is to last for 7 days.  The patches did not work for us as Joe would pull the patch off, or the patch would come off in a bath etc... I find the liquid Catapris much more effective and controlled.

I know medication is a very personal and private choice. For my son & I, the evening dose of Clonidine is a small miracle.   Evenings are quiet and productive and bedtime and homework are a breeze.

Thanks for all your replies. I had read that Clonidine, antidepressants, and seizure meds were all used for this explosive rage. We have been going thru this for over 2 years. We are in our 60's, can't get any help because of it, and have been hurt several times. It is like he is a wild person. Then later, he cries for hours. It breaks my heart.

Thanks. He takes liquid everything. I just want to get him off of the Abilify. The TD is getting worse the longer he stays, but if we can't decrease the dose because of the meltdowns. It is driving me crazy and frankly I think my husband is at the end of his rope. We also have a 40 year old daughter with Downs.

Calmed him within 20 minutes. He learned that it helped him and he got to where he would ask for it when he felt the anxiety coming. I think it began to act like a placebo. He expected it to help him calm down so it did. Now he uses prayer. He says, "God help me be calm", and he expects God to help him calm down, and he calms down. It has been years since Karac has pinched or pulled my hair or been aggressive with me in anyway. He still has brief periods of agitation, but he calms himself down and I keep my distance. He is 19 and has not been on any Meds in several years. Also, I don't put him in situations that I think will be too much for him. One of his therapists is getting married in June. Karac is invited. We will prepare him for it, but we will also prepare for a quick exit with him if it is necessary. if it doesn't go on too long I think he will be able to handle it. Exercise, walks and bike rides, also I take him swimming at the rec 2 or 3 times a week. I take him to Spirithorse once a week. It is a free therapy. The horseback riding calms him. It has been 4 years since he has had a meltdown on the horse and attacked it. There have been a couple of times when he has seemed so agitated that I have cancelled the session. I almost cancelled it this last Tuesday, but he calmed himself down by prayer and walking around before starting. He enjoyed the ride. Some days he can do things and some days he can't , but now he can tell me."no swimming, or no horse". I have learned better than to force it. I hate to get bitten.LOLThese kids are so different I doubt that any thing I have said can be useful to you. but I understand what you are going through.Sent from my iPadOn May 2, 2012, at 4:47 PM, drissia wright <ritzywright@...> wrote:
