And " they " say kids with DS have no imagination! LOL

Many " professionals " say that kids with DS are not able to perform

imaginary play. Where they got this idea, I don't know. But, I'd be happy

that is showing this type of extensive imagination. To name her

dog a name that is appropriate for dogs is very intelligent! I would

encourage her to think even more imaginative (after all, she's only 8!) and

ask her not only how is Sparky, but " what color is Sparky? " and " what does

Sparky eat? " and other such questions. Does Sparky have a collar? What is

written on the collar so that if he is lost people can return him to you?

(That maybe over her head, but it doesn't hurt to introduce these ideas.)

Maybe she'll take Sparky out for a walk... encouraging her to visualize

Sparky maybe a big step in her pyschological development (right now it

sounds like maybe she is not visualizing Sparky, since he remains under the

bed where you can't see him.. so maybe she is mimicing behavior of a

friend?). I think I am taking my cognitive psych class too seriously! LOL

I would also take this opportunity to teach social behavior! It is

wonderful that she left Sparky home and didn't take him to school! This

shows that she knows when it is appropriate to have an imaginary dog and

where it is not. That's great to encourage! Many 8 year olds (with or

without DS) do not practice this type of constrant!

Anyway.... to wrap this up.. I think that it's great play on 's

part. And it sure is cute!

Cheers,

Sara
