Guest guest
It is often the case that children or infants with DS are available for adoption. It only depends on what state you are in (some can only be placed in state), what kind of medical/developmental special needs you are open to, what races you are open to, what kind of agency you are adopting through, what kind of fees you can afford, what kind of birth-parent relationship you can allow, etc....... There are more than a few young children with DS available for adoption internationally. The list is long and extensive in the adoption process. Right now, the agency i work for and it's associates is not placing any children or infants with DS (just because there are none availble through our agency). However, I will not help families that are not home study ready to adopt a child with DS. It is way too risky! The first step to adopting is NOT to find a child, it is to learn about the adoption process and what type of adoption you want to do and then get home study ready (including home visits and personal visits from a certified social worker and whatever manditory classes are in order... as well as criminal and background tests, fianacial and official records). This process takes time... so starting off by finding a child to adopt will not get you that child, as he/she maybe placed by the time you are ready to adopt! Who's interested in adoption?? Our home study is almost done and we are working on a little girl in PA, but it probably won't work out. They want an exorbitant fee for her. (Just the agency, not including legal fees and travel!) It is not that I don't think she is worth it, but I can't put our family into bankruptcy. One thing this little angel is doing for us, is pushing our paperwork through, so maybe the next child will work out. I prefer to adopt in my state, if we can, it makes Birthparent visits so much easier. Also the transition of doctors and therapists. Good luck to all of us! They don't reduce them because this is a special needs case???? Just wondering... what agancy is this?? Apparently not. They say they only have two people interested. Us and a single woman. I can't believe they called all over the country and can't find anyone else interested. I believe it must be the cost and the lack of any subsidy. The agency wants $10,000 just for themselves. Then we'd have to pay legal fees, travel expenses and birthparent counseling. That on top of no subsidy, is just too much for us to do right now. Yours is a home study update, right??? You have previous home studies, right??? It's much easier to rush a home study update than a brand new HS! ) Last summer my job was to edit all the home studies... oy... what a task!! Yes, our homestudy is just an update. Boy, you should have seen my worker scribbling away, trying to get it updated to send out! She literally ran through the rooms. Ya know that the federal regulations on subsidies have changed, right?? Can no longer apply for a state subsidy from the child's adoptive state if going through a private agency. You must apply for your state subsidy. Gotta be careful with that if you apply for a subsidy! Just a heads up! Yes, we know. No subsidy for this little one. They said maybe to SSI. If that was all, we wouldn't hesitate, but it's the $10,000 for the agency. We feel like she is being auctioned off to the highest bidder. They claim $3,000 of it is for medical records. How many can she possibly have? I got a year of 's records for $50. My doctor and my lawyer say they are gouging. It just makes me angry that this child has to suffer for it. And her birthparents. They are going to present our homestudy and photos to them tomorrow (I think). Our photos did not turn out in the fax, so I emailed some. Hope they got them, I haven't heard yet....
