Hi Everyone,

Have any of you ever tried talking about the accomplishments of your children with someone who doesn't have a child with Ds, and they just sort of look at you or smile but you can tell they don't really see the big deal in it? Well I have and that is why I love this list cause I feel like I can "brag" and you all know how exciting and what a sense of relief every accomplishment is.

Here is my "brag" today. Maggie is transitioning from the Early Intervention program into the public school system due to her 3rd birthday in a couple of weeks. Part of the change involves a physce. eval. Well, Maggie met with this doctor who is apparently a big deal in Massachusetts. She is the leading child phycologist. Anyway, I always have some trepidation when Maggie meets new people cause she can either be nice Maggie or she can be difficult Maggie. You never really know what she is going to do. Anyway she was wonderful. She was doing things I didn't even know she could do. She matched all her colors and shapes. She even counted to 3!

When I received the report amongst alot of mumbo-jumbo, this woman, who has seen hundreds, perhaps thousands of children with Down syndrome, wrote that Maggie was the highest functioning child with Down syndrome that she has ever evaluated. She went on to say that if it weren't for the speech delay, Maggie would not score as mentally retarded. I am so amazed and happy and hopeful. I attribute Maggie's success to have a twin. I really think our kids have such a huge advantage having an exact age sibling to model behaivor...sometimes good and bad.

Thanks for letting me have a place to share this stuff!

WOW! That is EXCELLENTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!! WAY TO GO MAGS!!!!!!!! I have

to admit... when I read that she matched shapes and colors and counted to 3

I went " HOLY COW! That's awesome! " And that holy cow was meant to mean that

is awesome for anyone just turning 3! Extra chromo or not! Mags is one

fabulous gal!!

As for the nice Maggie or the difficult Maggie... I had to laugh. Martha

Beck presented an AMAZING speech at the 2000 NDSS Conference on this same

situation with her son. When he was about 6 year old (if my memory serves

me correctly), his school was placing him through these weekly tests.

They'd hold up super easy cards of a picture of a ball or truck and ask him

what it was. As they went on the tests got harder and when he could no

longer answer the question, they gave him a can of sprite and allowed him

to play. Well, he is no fool... he figured this out.. and one day when

Martha and him sat down with the " professional " to test him, he sat with a

blank look on his face, mouth wide open, with a pitiful " I dunno " look on

his face. The women held up a picture of a ball and asked him " what's

this? " ... " cat " he said. " WHAT?! " a freaked Martha replied, " You know what

that is! " And the test went on, and her son continued to play " dumb. " So

after a minute the women gave him his soda and sent him to play. He turned

around gave Martha a BIG smile like " ha! got them! " and went off to play.

Martha tried to convince the women that he was faking... that he did know

the answers... but she wrote down on the chart " mother in denial " instead.

ROTFLMAO... I love our kids' antics!

And, I agree with you. Having a twin does help! Fer sure!

Again, CONGRATS Mags! You show 'em girl! You sure did make my day!

Cheers!

Sara

,

That is great news about Maggie. While all our children will most

likely have different level of functioning, we should remember never

to give up on our dreams for them. In fact I have even started a

college trust fund for Tyler, I know that once he is in high school

I will have to determine wether he actually has the potential to

spend the money on something else for him before he is 18. The more

I read and surf the net these days the more I find of children with

DS going to college and earning degrees. I believe in the future this

will be a much more common occurance. Which leads to our next push

of advocacy in helping our children get the jobs they deserve based

on their education and not be tossed to the side by employers because

they can't get past they fact our children look different because of

Down Syndrome. Enough of my future thinking.
