WOW! GREAT NEWS TYLER !!! Way to go! He's ready to take-off on his own

pretty soon!

Sorry to hear about 's " delay. " A lot of children go through this,

she is probably just a late talker. I bet when she does start talking

you'll never be able to stop her!

Welcome back Katy!

's twin also has a significant speech delay. At 18 months

only had about 3 words that he'd say reliably. They're 26 months now and

the speech therapy helped quite a bit and now we don't have to go back until

November for a re-evaluation (for him, that is; her ST is continuing). He's

still fairly unintelligible, though, and it's very difficult to get him to

mimic words or sounds. He does have all the inflection and intent to

speak, we just don't hear any words in his babble. Does anyone else have a

non-DS twin with a speech delay? They keep telling me it's a twin thing and

not because of 's DS but I know other twins that don't have this

significant a delay.

Katy,

That is exciting news about Tyler being so close to independent walking. I'm getting excited for to make that leap too, and boy is she trying!!

Ever since her surgery she is so much more energetic, pulling up on everything and occasionally letting go and standing for a few seconds. She was fit for orthotics last week, so when those come in her therapists think in won't be goo long until she is hot on 's trail, walking all around. Let me know how it goes for Tyler!

Abbi also has a significant speech delay. She has been in therapy for a year

now. It was awhile before I could convince the therapist (who saw her twin

) that she had a speech delay. I had her hearing checked and she had a

mild to moderate hearing loss. The Audiologist believes that it is also from

all the ear infections she had the first year. Abbi has responded with

speech therapy very nicely. But now our insurance is saying that they will

only cover 1000.00 and that is it per year. Since she does not have Ds then

they will not authorize her to have any more therapy until next year. It

makes me so mad seeing her come so far and then have to stop.

Sorry to ramble on that is my soap box this week. Thanks for listening.

We were very fortunate to have an ENT in the area who sees quite a few of

the kids with DS here and he is very willing to put in tubes at a young age.

Both kids had tubes at about 11 months and haven't had (m)any problems with

their ears since then. They had their hearing tested before and after the

tubes and there was a good bit of difference. ( (DS) actually didn't

get a good reading on the audiology test but they did an ABR while they had

her sedated and found that she was on the low side of the normal range for

hearing.) My older son didn't get tubes until he was 2 and his speech

wasn't so much delayed as unintelligible. Not bad enough to require speech

therapy (of course), but the grandparents had a hard time understanding him

until he was about 5.

It seems the key to getting things covered by insurance is knowing how to

code it. Anything " developmental " will raise a red flag but things like

" hypotonia " or " dysphagia " or " aphasia " seem to get by. I've gotten to know

the referral coordinator at the pediatrician's office very well in the past

two years!

Maggie and tubes and ears are such an ongoing saga in my life. She never

has an ear infection but at 12 months she had tubes put in due to a flat

tympanagram cause of all the fluid. Finally a year and 1/2 later they take

the tubes out. When I took for a hearing test, she has fluid. Friday she

is getting new tubes put in! I am sad because she has lost so much time

hearing and therefore aquiring language. Cross fingers that these next

tubes do it!

just had another hearing test today, she has no hearing

loss, thank goodness. She start speech therapy at the end of

AUG. Well it is nice to know that some insurance companies pay

for your childrens therapy. Apparently my HMO does not pay for

anything at least as far as I have been able to find out.

Katy: Since has a delay requiring therapy,

and she's over 3 years old, why doesn't your school

district provide services for her??? Just curious.

Katy, I agree with Judi. I would contact your school

district. Here in South Carolina, the school district

has to provide it. Several families who have children

in a private school bring their children into the

school where I work for speech therapy. I don't think

our school district is liable for transportation for

these kids but they do have to provide the therapy. I

would think it would be the same in all states. I

would call Special Services in my school district and

ask. It sure can't hurt. Let us know what happens if

you contact them. I would be curious to know if it is

the law in all states. mom to Landon (Ds) and
