Dylan is the older of the two(5 1/2)...the trisomy 21 is more dominant in him than the secondary disorder-if you saw him you could tell he has down syndrome. Caleb (2), on the other hand, does not look anything like he has down syndrome because the trisomy 9p seems more dominant in him than the tri.21. However, both boys DO have ds! I guess it is just how the genes are affected that causes them to be more like one thing than the other! Whew! confusing! anyway, they are both doing very well and we are very thankful. dylan has had behavior problems for years but seems to be making great improvements lately!!!!!!!! He is actually beginning to act like a happy little boy more andmore. And, Caleb just started walking!!!!!!!! sorry so long, good to have you aboard, any questions, feel free to ask..... Guest guest
Hi Barb, I have 2 children with Trisomy 21. They are my youngest 2 girls. Emma is 5 and Nicki is 4 (nearly 14 months apart). I had no idea that either would have Ds as we opted not to have prenatal testing apart from the ultrasounds. Nothing was ever detected. At first we were very angry and devastated that Nicki had Ds also but now it doesn't seem to matter. She is who she is and fantastic with it. Emma and Nicki are the best of friends and I think they are so lucky to have each other. Even now they are never apart and always play together. They also seem to have their own language and share jokes with each other that the rest of the family don't understand - a bit like twins I guess. I am sorry to hear that with need surgery and pray that everything goes well. Nicki was in NICU and SCUBU for 8 weeks and had heart surgery for a PDA when she was 6 weeks old. It was a very traumatic time but now seems like a distant memory. You are both very welcome to email me if you like on tcsykes@... We have a website but I don't know what condition it is in at the moment. Geocities is having some trouble with hosting and has lost some websites. Here's the link below anyway and it tells our story of how things were way back when and how we felt about Emma and Nicki being born with Ds. Guest guest
Hi Barb, Welcome we have one other grandmother who is on this site too. Hopefully she will post soon. My name is Katy and I have G-B twins, my son has DS, we did not know until he was born. I look forward to hearing from your daughter. This group is great for getting advice and support. Sorry to hear that needs heart surgery, however, many advances have been made in the last four years so maybe his surgery will not be so traumatic. I would recommend checking with a number of younger cardiologists for what is the best way to correct 's heart problems. I have one friend whose daughter with DS was suppose to have open heart surgery but due to some information I got from my son's cardiologist and a story I saw on the discovery channel her daughter had heart surgery by a cathader (SP) in the groin to place a butterfly like device to seal the holes in her heart. She had both a ASD and PDA corrected by this surgery spent one night in the hospital and went home the next day to raise cain. She was one of the first to have this device used to repair the PDA. Her surgery was done at Children's Hospital Washington DC. I used to live in Columbus while going to graduate school at Ohio State, Go Buckeyes!!! Love the Columbus Zoo. Guest guest
Hi Barb, My name is and I have four children. Quinn is 5, Sara and Maggie are 2-Maggie has the extra chromosome, and Teddy is 9 months. Maggie is doing very well. Currently I am " consumed " with potty training Sara and getting Maggie to use her language more. She will repeat almost anything you say to her but rarely uses words on her own. She signs pretty well but I really want to get her talking. Welcome to the group!
