Irma I am going to try and tackle your questions and ask a few of my own.

ABA/VB -- assume Applied Behavior Analysis but what is the VB?

Lovass, Carbone, Sunberg, Greenspan -- Heard these names but educate me on

their theories.

When you do get a chance to visit agencies for adult services it will be good

to do. The administration is always glowing and generally you get a good

feel that they do a good job. It may be helpful to meet some of the parents to

get first hand info.

was the third of our six children. Growing up he was your normal DS

child except he didn't speak. At the agency where he went from age 4 to 9 they

kept saying he was going to speak any day. At that time he had his own home

made signs for things and to get his attention we flicked the lights. When he

was 9 he changed from the private agency to a new special ed school that was

build. The speech teacher began to question about his hearing. She said she

got more response from when she was facing him than when she was behind

him. That began the first journey of audiological testing, finding he did have

a

hearing loss, began wearing a hearing aid, and I began sign classes. We had

our normal challenges with the schools about programing as we did with any of

our kids. We didn't have any real behavior problems other than your normal

sibling fighting. was able to go to school the whole year he was 21.

Prior to graduation we were encouraged to get on waiting lists for work

shop

and residence. He began workshop after graduation. Then at age 22 1/2 we

switched from the pediatrician to internal med physician. First thing he began

to question and after testing determined was severe hypothyroidism. He

began on Synthroid but we could never get it to therapeutic dose because it

threw what I called adolescence when all the other hormones began to work.

It was almost like he was wired, when frustrated he would bite his wrist, other

times he would scratch his face. First time we saw that we wondered what

happened until my husband caught him doing it. Headaches began. Then in 1989

we

were offered a residence placement, took it, 10 weeks later he was discharged

because he injured someone. This was after he came back from my father's

funeral who he loved as G'pa always played Santa Claus. (The old tears come

back.) Such a devastating time for all. We took to an adolescent

physician

who put him on Tegretol for the mood swings and after this we were able to get

his Synthroid to therapeutic dose. We tried a drug holiday with the Tegretol

several months later but he began to bite his wrist and scratch his face and

get upset over little things like hanging up his coat so it was restarted.

The agency where he was prior to residence came to our rescue and provided

in-home CILA program until 1992 when he went into residence. Sign language has

been his primary mode of communication since we found out about his hearing

loss.

When I went back to work in 1978 because I knew sign language it began a 12

year profession for me working with the deaf with mental health problems.

Funny how that worked out if it weren't for I wouldn't have gone in that

direction and have the resources I have today. Throughout all of this did

not have any special therapies we just worked with the deafness.

I will continue in another email about after 1992 and his residential life.

Gotta do some other things this morning.

Louise in IL Mom to 41 DS etc. and newly DX autism

Hey Irma, why aren't you an OT? Well, for that matter, a ST too. I decided

when my girls go to school, I'm going to work at being a ST just so the

district can't pull the wool over my eyes anymore. I know who to go to for info

now, don't I ? LOL

Gail :-)
