Guest guest
WAUSAU -- At least a dozen kids in Milwaukee County are quarantined after they were exposed to a toddler who has the measles. Now doctors across the state are warning parents to get their children vaccinated. Dr. beth Madagame says, " People don't realize how horrible measles can be, and that death occurs from measles. " In Milwaukee, doctors quarantined all other children who attended daycare with the infected toddler. They say the disease is spread just by being in the same room as an infected person. Here, day-cares say they're required by the state to keep up on vaccinations. Debbie Mohelnitzky has been in the childcare business for more than 30 years. Mohelnitzky says, " We aren't seeing the polio experiences that they did have when we were young children, and we don't see the measles outbreak. I think the immunization program is a big help to that. " Doctors say that prevention is the only treatment for the disease. That's why they encourage parents get their kids that vaccine as early as 12 months. Dr. Madagame says, " Not all people mount enough of a response or any response to the first one, so the second one occurs at the kindergarten age. " These vaccines don't come without controversy. A recent study linked the diagnosis of autism with the MMR vaccine. But doctors here say that link isn't proven. They say it could be a coincidence, because the diagnosis of autism often comes around the same age as the children receive those vaccines. Here's what to look for in your child... Symptoms of the measles are similar to other diseases like the flu or cold. Measles comes with the onset of a fever, a splotchy rash, excessive nasal secretions, and red but not itchy eyes. If you do think your child has some of these symptoms, doctors say the most important thing is to keep your child away from the clinic because it IS so contagious. http://www.waow.com/News/index.php?ID=23559
