I'm just wondering if ALA can be used safely and effectively without DMSA.

From what I've been reading it sounds like ALA is the drug that pulls the

mercury out of the brain and helps the body eliminate it. Why then do we

need DMSA? Has anybody had good results with ALA only? Thanks, Pat

The DMSA is not essential. It does appear to speed things up about

40% and also to change the side effect profile quite a bit.

Several adults have detoxed with ALA only, not using DMSA for assorted

reasons. It worked just fine for all of them. I don't think it would

be any different for children.

Does DMSA change the side effectp profile for good or for bad? If

using ALA alone, do you follow the dosage that you suggesting in the

protocol using ALA with DMSA?

Hi Pat.

We have been using the ALA alone for awhile now, and are having very

good results. Most people around us have no idea that we are doing

this, yet they all are astounded at how much better is doing

all the time now. She is growing in leaps and bounds. My dad came to

stay with us from another state recently, and could not believe that

it was the same child. We see gains with every round of ALA, and there

have not really been any negatives.

Thank you for your report. Can you tell me if it has improved your

daughter's verbal abilities? Was she verbal prior to chelation?

Thanks,

Prior to chelation, she was COMPLETELY non-verbal. She is now babbling

constantly in the same way as my toddler did right before speech, and she is

singing songs with all the words a lot. She does say things that you can

understand if you listen close, like she was counting to 10 the other day. When

I realized what she was doing and started holding up my fingers for what number

she was one, she grinned ear to ear and hugged me :-)

I would say that her growing verbal abilities are one of the best things about

chelation.

She is 4, by the way.

Jennnifer - What dosage do you use of the ALA and do you use the same

cycle periods (3 days on, 11 days off) when you use it? How do you

get the ALA? Have you been working with a doctor?

DMSA usually improves the side effect profile, but it ALWAYS changes

it. A few people will prefer the ALA only side effects, most do

better side effect wise on the combo.

Use about the same amount of ALA either way.

I did a few rounds of ALA only (without DMSA) with my

daughter over the summer. I did see some positive

results. Once we found a doctor, I stopped doing

that pending all the testing. We are now using DMSA.

We did five rounds and this past weekend, we added

ALA. I have no patience to wait for urine test

results and although I was seeing improvement with

each round of DMSA, I did not see any improvement last

weekend and my husband and I decided (and will tell

our doctor -- hopefully he has no problem with it) to

include the ALA.

I have previously posted the improvements that we have

been seeing. I think reintroducing the ALA was a good

idea because she was absolutely wonderful yesterday.

In a great mood and even managed to unsnap her pants

herself (for this apraxic kid -- that is a HUGE step).

We'll keep plugging along and go with our gut

instincts. I am still awaiting results of six hour

urine test that we did December 18th.

> - What dosage do you use of the ALA ?

We had been giving her 1/4 of a 50 mg capsule at a time, but we recently upped

it to 1/2 of a 50 mg capsule with no ill results.

She weighs a little over 30 lbs.

>and do you use the same cycle periods (3 days on, 11 days off) when you use it

It depends on the circumstances. Some weeks we do it for 3 days on, every 3

hours during the day and every 4 hours at night, and then 4 days off. I have 3

other small children, and so sometimes I am not up to getting up during the

night. At these times, I do it every 3 hours during 1 day, skip that night and

the next day and night, then do it again the next day, so a week would look

like: Mon off, Tues on, Wed off, Thurs on, Fri off, Sat on, Sun off. On our last

cycle, we did 5 days on, 9 days off. We really just go by what is happening in

our

lives at the time, and work around it.

>How do you get the ALA?

At the health food store, in 50 mg capsules.

>Have you been working with a doctor?

I am generally not too interested in working with doctors, as the last one made

my child autistic, and most of the people I know have been more hurt than helped

by them. I don't believe that this is because all doctors are bad people, by any

means, just that they have been taught some very dangerous info :-/ We have

pretty much opted out of the medical system alltogether, although if we needed a

bone set or someone was hit by a car, etc, we would definately fall back on it.

Thankfully, this hasn't happened. We as a family are much healthier now that we

have taken our health matters into our own hands.

That said, I did take in to see Dr Amy in Baton Rouge while we were on

our way to Florida for vacation last year. She was not seeing quite as many

children then, and was able to make an opening for us when I wrote her about it.

She knew exactly where I stood with my views on doctors, etc, and agreed to see

us anyway. So basically, she was able to 'officially' confirm what I already

knew about my daughter, and we have her to fall back on should we ever want to

do more testing, etc. And she was able to do some testing I wanted done to see

what my child needed specifically with some diet supplements.

Tali been curious about this so glad you posted. I remember you were using la alone. I hear some very positive improvements with la along with dmsa . I am wondering now if it is really necessary to wait until mercury levels drop before adding la ???? kelly

Sounds like it's more of a precautionary measure in

the event of recent exposure (through amalgam removal

or otherwise). In my daughter's case, she never had

amalgams and the only exposures that I am aware of

were inutero and vaccinations.

I'm glad we tried it with DMSA alone for these few

rounds. I'll be looking forward to seeing if there

are more noticeable improvements adding the ALA. Also

going to try the one day on, one day off thing because

we were messing up big time with the nightime waking.

I confess, Andy, we were blowing it on the every four

hour deal at night. I didn't see any major problems,

but maybe we didn't get the kind of improvement we

should have either.

Just adding to what says, our son Adam, age 10 and verbal prior to

chelation (at about a 7 yr. old level of speech) has become more willing to

speak more with chelation. He is not so silent and comes forward to tell us

what's on his mind, becomes more sharing of what he enjoys or shares what he

is seeing that is interesting. He yelled out hi to friends passing by in a

car (on the way home from school) - something he would never do before. He

also has done more singing and early on in chelation, showed rhythm to the

music by blowing a little whistle to the beat of the music. (never done

before chelation). A friend of mine whose son has much less language than

my son also showed these music and rhythm signs upon beginning chelation,

too.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a mercury chelator. As far as I understand it is the

only mercury chelator that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Improper usage of

any mercury chelator can and does often cause extensive mercury redistribution

problems.

It is important to understand that chelators like ALA, DMSA, and DMPS should

not be used casually, but only within a safe chelation protocol.

[ ] using ALA alone

my son is on cocktail to support the mitochondria for a presumed

mitochondrial disorder. The antioxidant ALA is included. Is there

any risk to using this without other chelating agents? What clinical

signs/symptoms should I look for?

The use of ALA can also make a zinc/copper imbalance worse (it

somehow inhibits the excretion of copper). Do you know if your

child has ever been high in copper? Many kids with Autism are;

mine included. Copper toxicity is not a good thing. We are

addressing this imbalance before going further with chelation.

Yes, the problem is the dose and dosing schedule which can cause redistribution

of mercury and if he has any mercury amalgam dental fillings.

Nadine, I guess you meant 10 mg/kg/day.

Andy recommends 1/8 to 1/2 of body weight in pounds.

If your son is 10 kg (= 22 lbs), that would be 3 to 10 mg every 3 hrs

for 3 days and nights. Then at least 3 days break.

If your son is mercury toxic, giving him that much ALA, everyday, on

that 3 times a day schedule could be very dangerous.

I started chelating my 2 yo with 4 mg and I saw amazing progress. The

dose does not have to be high to be effective.

I started my son [at age 5-1/2, about 50 pounds] with 25mg ALA 3x per

day. I did eventually work him up to 100mg ALA 3x per day, that was

the dose for the last 20-30 rounds or so. He was finished with

chelation at age 8. He did fine with this protocol, altho if I gave

the ALA more than 6 days in a row, he would get a nasty yeast

overgrowth issue. Plus his body would not have had any days to rest

from processing metals.

So giving 60mg per dose, 3x per day, would have worked for my son when

he was about 7yo, except for the yeast issue if I gave it daily. How

old is your child, and how is he doing with the daily dose?

Nadine, I still don't get it. It seems it is 10 mg/kg/day. Your son

is 24 kg and his recommended daily dose is 80 mg three times a day,

thus 240 mg. You are actually giving him 60 mg three times a day,

which is 180 mg. If you want to follow Andy's protocol, and keep the

same daily dose, you can just give him 22.5 mg every 3 hrs. To make

it easier, you could just give him 20 mg every 3 hrs.

How long have you done this? How did he react?

Most people agrees that daily ALA (with no break) is very dangerous

for mercury toxic people. That is why we do rounds of a few days and

then a break.

Have you done a hair test?

Then it is *probably* okay, but you might want to consider giving him

a break from it for a week or so, especially if you notice an increase

in yeast.

One thing to mention. ALA can mean alpha lipoic acid [antioxidant and

chelator] and alpha linoleic acid [fatty acid]. I have been giving my

info on alpha lipoic acid. If the ALA in your supplement is alpha

linoleic acid, then none of this applies, and you can give it daily

without problems.
