Stories like you report are very disturbing. My function is to work with not against my patients. If I have different opinion I should be able to let the parent know and of course vice-versa. Just before I received your email one of the local docs was describing a situation in which a child with appendicitis waited so long for the surgeon - who was in a "meeting" that the appendix burst. I find myself in a quandry about vaccines in that those parents who are not aware of the association that most parents of autistic have seen are asking me about the safety of the vaccines. The forms from the AMA etc do not list the risk of autism on them. It is also interesting to note that one of the "quality" items that the health plans - ie HMOs judge a primary care doc is the % of children immunized - not on the rate of complicatons or illness caused! I hear !

what you are saying about some docs and I believe that doctors would have a better relationship with their patients if they listened and became patient advocates. I do not want to sound "holier than thou" - I have not always made the correct diagnosis or listened to a parent and realized wha the were really saying. However if I am aware of these failings than I can try and improve. As A completely separate item I do not know if you have seen the latest artiel in JAMA where the authors took hair samples from the same patient and sent them to 9 diffeent labs and found little if any agreemenrt between the labs. I am trying to digest this article and see how we should respond to it. Thanks for letting me drag on Hart
