Hi Gail,

Regarding giving meds to Tara. Things that have worked for Sara are as

follows: when she was a baby, giving them to her in the bathtub or while

watching a video worked. Having someone other than me give them, seems to

take away the power struggle. Now that she is five, I put the medicine in a

spoon with miniature marshmallows. Sometimes, I make a game and will say,

I'll put a little in your left check and then a little in your right cheek.

I guess the only thing I haven't done is stand on my head. Hope this

helps--we're thinking of Tara as she recovers from pneumonia.

OK Judi!

I've thought the same thing, quiet lately, but I did try to post over

the weekend, and couldn't for some reason?

Hey, how about that sippy cup! I'm all for them, our ST is NOT! I'm

going to ask her next time I see her, EXACTLY what cup does she think

I'm going to hand to Tara{and } when we are traveling{which we do

alot!}in the van, an OPEN lid cup? NOT! Judi, how are the boys with a

cup with a spout, how is their tounge thrust, good or bad? Not sure how

Tara's is, I would need to see another baby or babies with Ds to say for

sure I'm not a good judge. But, I do put a 2 handle sippy cup on both

their tray after lunch for practice, still doesn't know what to do

with it yet!

Thanks for everyones concern for Tara, going to the dr.'s tomorrow for

yet another tympanogram, we are tracking, and think we are heading

towards tubes! YIKES, but I guess it's for the best outcome, right!

Carolyn, I also use TNI with Tara's diet, I wish I had the positive

success you have with your children not being as sick, it doesn't seem

to make a difference with Tara unfortunetly. I am thinking when the

twins turn 1 next month, switching Tara onto a rice milk, or something

other than regular whole milk, just to see how many illnesses she has

then?

.....I guess I'm for once lucky with something, like Jillian still

likes her afternoon naps, maybe she just wants to get away from me?

hey, this is getting long huh?....................

QUESTION ............how does everyone administer liquid meds to their

children{babies}with DS? It has been BRUTAL getting down Tara " s meds for

this pneumonia 2x/day, hate it! It's always a fight and Tara screams, my

other kids think I'm hurting her. yuk :(

Hey Gail!!!

Sippy cups, yes, I was told by our ot/pt that *they*

really didn't prefer using them. Well *they* don't

have to clean up after two little messy boys, now do

*they*!!!! I do practice occasionally, but

unfortunately, both boys are in a phase where they

like to dump things out, ie. their plate of food,

anything in an open cup, etc. Get the picture???? At

school and at day-care they are also working with them

on drinking from an open cup. I think day-care is

having the most success because all of the other kids

in their class are using an open cup and not a sippy

cup. My personal opinion, is that the non-spill,

non-drip kind are the greatest thing since sliced

bread!!

Tongue thrust, it's funny you should ask. When Sam

eats, he swallows with his lips closed. He's a very

neat, methodical eater. , on the other hand is

the complete opposite. When he chews, he keeps his

mouth closed (for the most part), however, when he

swallows, out comes the tongue. I still do the facial

massage stuff around the mouth with him, more than

Sam. I think I work a little bit more while brushing

his teeth too. However, when they are playing, not

eating, Sam is the one who's mouth is usually hanging

open, tongue doesn't hang past his bottom teeth tho.

Again, 's pretty much the opposite. His mouth

is usually closed. For about a year now, when I'd see

them w/the mouth hanging open, I'd say " put your

tongue away " . And kind of swipe the side of the

tongue w/my finger to make it retract back in the

mouth. Now I just say " put your tongue away " and they

pop it back in their mouth with their own finger.

Kinda cute, but they get the hint. I find myself

saying that more to Sam than lately, but it's

still effective!!

Ok, now regarding meds, I've always used a " dropper "

thing. You can get them at the pharmacy. Just one of

those regular medicine droppers with the calibrations

on the side for dosage. I find I can get that into

the inside corner of their cheek easier than using one

of those open top, spoon looking things. I must be

lucky that they really do take their medicine quite

well, but I've heard/tried blowing into their face as

you give them the meds will give them a startle reflex

causing them to swallow, kind of before they've had a

chance to react and taste whatever it is you are

giving them. Hope this helps!!!
