Guest guest
-I believe that after age 35 the chance is about 1 in every 100 births--that is what I have been told. Fran (/ and Alyssa(DS))

Guest guest
- Sorry I misunderstood the question. It is 100% that a women with DS will give birth to a baby with DS--The extra chromosome will get carried over in the cell division since this extra chromosome is part of her total genetic makeup. I originally thought you were asking the chance for a normal women to have a child with DS. Fran

Guest guest
- Since Dr. Leschin is the Medical Expert, then I would believe what he states is true. I have been told that the percentage is closer to 100% by a few Geneticists though. These MDs may be stating such a high percentage as a precaution. Amber and I both responded with the answer of 50%. As far as I know there have only been one or two cases of a man with down syndrome being able to reproduce so I am assuming in answering 50% that the woman would be having a child with a man who does not have down syndrome. I asked Dr. Len Leshin what was the correct answer and here is what he said. If a woman with DS has a baby by a man without DS, then she has a 50% chance of conceiving a baby with DS, since half of her zygotes will have one chromosome 21 and the other half will have two chromosome 21s. However, since over 80% of all conceptions with DS do not make it to term, her odds of having a live baby with DS are actually lower. These MDs may be stating such a high percentage as a precaution. I would certainly have a little " chat " with these geneticists as they are passing out FALSE information. I certainly am not doubting you in that they have said this but my goodness, a GENETICIST saying something like that just as a precaution!!!.......I hope I never get in the same room as a geneticist that claims something like that when they should know what they are talking about. GEZZZ...we parents have ALOT of educating to do. I do not fail as a parent if I fail to find the answers. I do fail as a parent if I fail to try.
