I believe its a 50/50 chance that a ds woman

will have a ds child (straight trisomy 21)

Sorry to here they didn't extubate yet, I was on that

roller coaster ride with Skylar when she had RSV in

Feb. Soon will be home & everything will be like

a bad dream........We are all praying for her

for a woman with down syndrome to give birth to a child with down syndrome??

From everything that I have read and been told, the chances are 50%

Sorry I misunderstood the question. It is 100% that a women with DS will

give birth to a baby with DS--The extra chromosome will get carried over in

the cell division since this extra chromosome is part of her total genetic

makeup.

I originally thought you were asking the chance for a normal women to have a

child with DS.

**I have always heard that its a 50% chance of a woman with ds

giving birth to a child with ds....Not 100%**

Since Dr. Leschin is the Medical Expert, then I would believe what he states

is true.

I have been told that the percentage is closer to 100% by a few Geneticists

though. These MDs may be stating such a high percentage as a precaution.

Fran;

I am going to have to agree with Amber on this one again and also

mention that Kay (I believe) was the one who was originally asking the

question as to what the percentage was for a woman with ds to give birth to

a child with ds is. Amber and I both responded with the answer of 50%. As

far as I know there have only been one or two cases of a man with down

syndrome being able to reproduce so I am assuming in answering 50% that the

woman would be having a child with a man who does not have down syndrome. I

asked Dr. Len Leshin what was the correct answer and here is what he said.

If a woman with DS has a baby by a man without DS, then she has a 50%

chance of conceiving a baby with DS, since half of her zygotes will have

one chromosome 21 and the other half will have two chromosome 21s.

However, since over 80% of all conceptions with DS do not make it to term,

her odds of having a live baby with DS are actually lower.

I would certainly have a little " chat " with these geneticists as they are

passing out FALSE information. I certainly am not doubting you in that they

have said this but my goodness, a GENETICIST saying something like that just

as a precaution!!!.......I hope I never get in the same room as a geneticist

that claims something like that when they should know what they are talking

about. GEZZZ...we parents have ALOT of educating to do.

I do not fail as a parent if I fail to find the answers. I do fail as a

parent if I fail to try.
