Guest guest Posted March 30, 1999 Report Share Posted March 30, 1999 Hi Gail Nicki and Emma were both around 2 when we dropped the bottles and got onto the sippy cups or drinking from a straw. They still have their bottles at night - it's my way of getting to cuddle with them - so I'm selfish...hee hee!! If you want to do exercises that include puckering up like you'd be using a straw, we started with large whistles and worked our way down to the smallest whistle we could find. We also did a lot of games that involved blowing through a straw to move a ping pong ball around their high chair trays . This was interesting because the girls started with blowing into their drinks instead of sucking......they soon got the hang of it! HA. Personally I think 1 is too young to stop using a bottle but you can introduce a straw anyway but not as the main method of getting fluids - just as practice. Just my 2 cents worth!! They wanted him to drink for a straw when he was around 2 but he just couldn't get the hang of it. At that time I couldn't get Tyler (his twin) to either. When he started school his speech therapist said don't rush him off a bottle because it is good oral stimulation. hardly will take one now. I try to hand him one now and he throws it likes he a quarterback for a football team. Now I'm having trouble getting him to even drink from a cup. His speech therapist dropped him this year and said he shows no sign of trying to form any sounds vowels or cons. and maybe he'll do better next year. Can anyone tell me what that's all about? We are working on a straw but I am having little success. Ashton cries when he has a bottle and I give her a cup. Soo, I give in and give her a bottle. Of course he has a feeding tube. Just keep practicing. Maggie does very well with a Tippy cup. She has to suck and it is slow enough that it doesn't shock her. Try a tippy for awhile...some people call them sippy cups too. a topic! At 22 months Vinnie and Sloan still have a bottle for nap and bed time.They drink from a sippy cup at all other times and can drink from a straw,but I was never told to make them use a straw.Vinnie does dribble and sometimes just lets the drink flow down his chin. She will take liquids from a straw that I put in her mouth after getting liquid into it. Any suggestions on what other kinds of cups or straw type containers have worked? He aspirates and that is why he has been off the bottle for so long. He has a feeding tube. Sorry if I confused you. Oh as for the vits. Guest guest Posted March 22, 2000 Report Share Posted March 22, 2000 Gail: I had read somewhere, that between the ages of 15-18 months were ideal for " weaning " a baby off the bottle. I hadn't heard about 12 mos! That seems a little early to me. Anyway, my OT said the same thing, she didn't want to see the boys drinking from a " sippy cup " , but you know what? She doesn't have twins, and she doesn't have to clean my house!!! I do work with them on using straws (the rubbermaid brand " juicebox " w/the built in straw - doesn't leak, works great!), and with an open cup. She did give us a couple of the " nosey " cups, they have a " cut-out " on one side (I wish I could draw a picture on e:mail, to explain, oh well!). Also, I would start with putting runny applesauce or yogurt in the cup first before going straight to liquids. You can also get something called " thickit " to put into juice, milk or whatever, to help control the flow so they get the idea, then gradually lessen the amount of " thickit " you use until you reach dealing w/liquids. The boys still have a long way to go in using nothing but a cup. Unfortunately right now, they are into " dumping " everything, food, drink, etc. Besides, I use the no-spill playtex sippy cups and they have to have a pretty strong suck to use it so I've justified that in my mind that they are getting good oral-motor exercises to those muscles in their mouth (lol)! Guest guest Posted March 23, 2000 Report Share Posted March 23, 2000 - I need to correct the spelling that I gave you all the other night--it is actually Doidy. My speech therapist is part of a group that uses this cup. It is a bit weird looking--actually it looks like a " melted " sippee cup---one side is higher than the other and the bottom of the cup is concave. The cup has two thin handles and is weighted. Alyssa is really getting very good at drinking from this cup (it has no top--the therapists do not want her drinking from a cup with a spout). Her problem is her arms are week and she can not hold the cup herself. The therpist had ordered this from a catalouge, however I am not sure which company makes this cup. If you want additional information I can find out and get back to you. (Also I can see if our therapist can explain the pros and cons of this cup versus others). You breastfed your twins! WOW I'm impressed and jealous! I had planned to breastfeed my twins, bought the special twin pillow and everything! I breastfed my older two kids as well, but with Tara being taken away to another hospital for the whole week and I were in the OTHER the hospital, it made for a terrible transition, plus add the absolute shock we/I were in finding out about Tara's diagnosis.......I just didn't have it in me, PLUS, " they " {nurses and dr.'s}told me the first time I saw Tara{5 days after delivery}she has poor/low muscle tone, and " might not be able to nurse good! " NOW, a year later I feel totally robbed of giving it a good try, I gave up way too soon!!! Because of what I was told!!!!!!! But Tara is drinking from a straw, but I know I don't practice enough with her, I wish we were home enough too practice!!!!!! She is always soaked when she practices with the straw or open cup.....double bibs!! Guest guest Posted March 29, 2000 Report Share Posted March 29, 2000 Gail, When Skye was born she wanted to sleep and did not want to feed(she would have a couple of sucks then be asleep).At first we tried unwrapping her tapping her on her cheek,tickling her feet etc. The midwives said the best thing for Skye was to be breastfed as it will help strenghten her muscle tone and her suction will develop.So we cup fed her first I was told cup feeding is using the same muscles as breastfeeding.(I did not know that at all until they told me).Again she would fall asleep, then they put a feeding tube through her nose(we only had it once,which I hated seeing it and with her crying when they put it in) Skye then went on the breast but she was slower(a lot) than at feeding. had one breast and Skye had the other.I sometimes swapped them so could keep the supply on Skyes side up. In New Zealand hospitals they are big on breastfeeding.(especially where I had the twins). I was going to breastfeed Skye even if it meant that she would feed an hour longer than I did not care. That was my special time with Skye and and talking to them both.The most adorable moment was when used to touch Skye on the shoulder and look at her. When Skye was close to 3yrs she just stopped her night(comfort feeds). stopped her nights before she was 2yrs. Tara will get the hang of the straw and cup I remembered when Skye actually drank through the straw and cup without a mess and the wearing of it was less and less.
