Guest guest Posted March 19, 2000 Report Share Posted March 19, 2000 Hi , On Friday, I met with Sara (DS) and 's preschool teacher for a home visit. Their teacher suggested strongly that I enroll in a siblings support group, which we have in a town about 25 miles from us. She said that with them going into K-garten next year, he is going to start having questions asked of him, like why his sister does this or does not do that, etc. She feels he needs to learn how to answer those questions without it compromising his self-esteem. It was not something I had actually thought about, but it does make sense and it also is making me face the reality that the twins are growing up and going out into the big world of school. As a mom of a little bit older twins, any comments about how your twins have done, socially, or if you used a sibling support group, etc. would be appreciated. Thank you! My last two are boy/girl twins, and Tara who will be turning ONE this Wed AND Thurs!!!!Tara was born with Ds. I'm very glad that this first year is over, I look back with not that many happy memories, with the shock of finding out about Tara, a terrible birth experience, and her being taken to ANOTHER hospital a 1/2 hr after birth.......lets just say it was terrible......I just had their pictures taken today at JCPenny and they came out terrible! Tara either wouldn't smile or was sticking out her tongue! yuk, didn't but too many....oh well.......... This list is my life line glad you are here! Vinnie has been starting to walk the past 2 months and getting around pretty good now.He still has to work on his balance.He has always been monkey see monkey do with his sister.He trys anything and everything she does. Since my 21 year old nephew and my husband's 37 year old cousin both have DS, we are very familiar with Alyssa's condition. However--it will great to be able to discuss the effects of having twins and one of the children having DS! At this point in time I feel that Alyssa is fortunate to have both and to watch and copy--she is great at studying their every move! Our PT and Spec Ed both believe that Alyssa will not walk until 24 months--but believe that she may surprise us and go around 22 months! When they register with it puts them under the topic of Down syndrome but they still aren't members of the club. After you register, go back to the club to see if it tells you if you are a member or not. If it says guest, just click on join this club at the top right hand corner. You have to be a member to access the chatroom, message board or to post or view pictures. Kay, I think this may have happened to you because when I went to check for someone else who had trouble joining I saw you listed under the Tiernan triplets. I thought it was more than likely you. You are just listed under Down syndrome and not a member of the club. Anyone who has joined recently may want to check to see if their membership went through.
