Guest guest
Judi Skylar(ds) & Autumn both had ABR's.......... They both got medicine to put them to sleep & they attached little sticky things on them (they look like ekg things) with wires, they are hooked to a machine that reads there brain waves to tell you what the brain knows the ears are hearing....test over....the kids wake up & its more accurate!! Guest guest
I am trying to schedule an ABR for next week while they've got under for the g-tube procedure. The doctor at the Duke DS Clinic told me she would need an ABR because she's really too young (8 mos) for a behavioral-based hearing test. The way he explained it, they bounce sound waves off the ear drum and measure the waves that come back, kinda like sonar waves and it tells them how much the ear drum is " conducting " the sound. It requires anesthesia from what I understand which is why I am trying to schedule it for next week since we've already got the other surgery scheduled. Leigh in raLeigh , 4.5 and (DS) and 8mos. -------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 23 Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 14:15:45 -0800 (PST) From: Judi Grossman <judig2@...> Subject: Question about Hearing Tests Hi! Sam and had their 4mo. follow-up to their tube/adenoid surgery yesterday. Got an A-OK from the ENT. I was asking him about a follow-up hearing test and he suggested we do an ABR, as a better way to " quantify " (his words) their hearing. Their previous hearing test was the " play-audiology " with the animals that light up. I know very little bit about the ABR, just that it measures brain-waves to check hearing. Have any of you out there had an ABR done on your kids? What was it like? I have a call in to the ENT's audiologist to ask her questions, but I always welcome and value your input too! Guest guest
It looks as if Nick will be having T & A surgery when his tubes are inserted. I am told by the ENT that this is still same day surgery unless something unexpected happens. Just waiting on the sleep study results to be sent to the ENT and then we get a surgery date. Guest guest
: No, they didn't have tonsils out, just adenoids. They aren't having a problem w/infection, and while their tonsils are pretty big, they aren't causing problems. This Dr. has a rather conservative approach to dealing w/tonsils in kids under 3 due to the long recovery/hospitalization that can be involved (they won't do tonsils day surgery in a child under 3, and they child can't be discharged until they are taking all fluids by mouth due to the risk of dehydration). I'm playing telephone tag with the Audiologist right now. I'll let you know what she says when we finally speak! Good luck w/Denton and his surgery! Hope it all goes well for him (and you!). BTW, where on the East Coast are you moving? Guest guest
Judi: we are moving from central fl to Tequesta fl. it is in West palm Beach area.the N end of the county. Both my kids have the runs so I am hoping this new ped. will get this under control today. Denton also doesnt have any probs w/ strep or tonsils, i guess this ENT feels its a good approach to go ahead and remove both. I know there is no harm as he is 5. he will stay over night and the ENT told me he cant leave till he is swallowing. --- Judi Grossman <judig2@...> wrote: > : No, they didn't have tonsils out, just > adenoids. Guest guest
Bonnie Having gone through T & A and ear surgery ( the three procedures in one surgery) with Danny, I would recommend that you plan on staying overnight. He's on his fifth set of tubes, and the tube surgery alone is a piece of cake. But the T & A is not. My ENT asked if Danny had sleep apnea, and I said yes, knowing that they would keep him overnight if I said yes. I'm not sure he had sleep apnea, but I was not sure he did not, either. They put him on a breathing monitor after surgery, and it was a pain when the wires came loose and the alarms went off several times that night, but all in all it was worth staying overnight (I stayed with him). He was hurting, and would not even suck on a popsicle. The next morning he took tiny sips of juice, so he could go home. He's never had major surgery, no heart issues or anything, this was his toughest. I am kind of overprotective, but always I'd choose to be extra careful. That's my style, so keep that in mind. Good luck. Jean n and Danny's (ds) mom
