Guest guest
Hi Gail, Our a (DS) has had a issue reflux and spitting up. Just yesterday we took her to the GI doctor to see if there was something else we could do instead of always upping the dosage of her Pulpolsid like our Pediatrician told us to do. The speech therapist told us that that was not the answer to possibly a more serious problem. So we took her to the GI doctor yesterday. We learned a few things there we did not know. They said that because a is not having regular everyday bowl movements for us, so she is backed up causing her to spit up easier. That at her size and weight (she's about 27 pounds and 30 inches high) she should be getting 48 ounces of fluids a day. We were only getting about 24 ounces of fluids down her a day along with regular solid food too. We do thicken a's milk with rice cereal, which helps her also to keep it down and from spitting it up so easy. They told us to continue that. They told us to try to get 2 ounces of water down her before bed time everynight to help soften her stools and help her to get them out easier. They also said to try to get more juice mixed with fruit baby food to thicken it down her to help move her stools. She will not drink juice, so we will try to do this through her G-tube that she still has in and we were going to have removed if we didn't use it through this winter (She had it put in due to when she would get sick we couldn't get her to eat or drink). We hadn't used it for about the last 6 months she has been doing so well with her feedings. We used the G-tube to put some thickened juice down her last night and she spit half of it back up. I think she was full still from eating and what we put her down her was just to much after eating an hour before. It may be better once she has a stool. I also think it went in to fast for her to handle when she's use to taking things in gradually now on her own. We were also told that she could overdose on Pulpolsid and not to give it more than 3 to 4 times a day. We thought she needed to get it everytime she drank or ate something. We were only giving her 2 ml each time she received it and found out that we should give her 2.8 ml each time. From what I understand it helps her be more comfortable with food intake, just like we would take Tums or Zantac. - mom to a (DS) and Cory - 18 months maybe serious problem? > From: GVanHouten <rjvh@...> > > Hi everyone, > The husband and I are getting very concerned with Tara. Guest guest
Hi Gail All my children have had Gastric Reflux so badly, and it seems to have gotten worse down the line. on projectile vomited yet there was nothing physically wrong with him. was worse - she would spill (although that word just doesn't describe the volume that came back up) constantly and I couldn't keep up with breastfeeding her. Emma and Nicki were much WORSE!! Emma at nearly 4 still very occasionally vomits when she is bending over after a meal. Nicki had serious gastric reflux. She was spilling and aspirating and that was the cause of her illness during her first year. She had pneumonia twice and constant upper reparatory infections because of reflux. We tried Prepulisid and Zantac and thickening her formula and sitting her up etc etc but nothing helped. A ST suggested that she have a GI tube inserted (Nicki was 9 months old at the time) and I was worried that the aspiration was doing damage to her lungs. However a few weeks passed and she was still spilling but not aspirating. She would also cough and splutter on a bottle from not swallowing correctly. She would vomit in any position but worried me the most is that she also spilled in her sleep! When she started sitting independently at about 13 months, her stomach muscles gradually strengthened. Her spilling decreased considerably but not entirely and she is also still doing the occasional spill especially if she has a cold and mucous is in her tummy (sorry guys - that's as gross as I'm going to get!!) It doesn't help that our babies with DS have such low muscle tone including all the muscles inside that help keep food down (the sphincter muscle??) and the peristalsis action isn't very efficient either (the involuntary muscle action that moves bowel motions along to their journey to the great outdoors). Our pediatrician said that Nickis reflux would resolve and she was thriving and having plenty of wet nappies. The aspirating had stopped and she stopped having so many URI's, we just had to wait it out - like for 2 1/2 years and still waiting!!! Have it checked out for your own peace of mind. Guest guest
, I got a question? If a,is not using the g-tube why? did they let you keep it so long? Seems to be that is more of a chane to get a infection...I am learning all I can. My Dayton 19months old, has had one since he was 9months old. March will be a year. He is had so many GI problems. WE have had 4 major surgeries. He is still aspirating on liquids and sometimes I can hear some solids food go the wrong way. He has been one of these kids that never cough or anything when aspitating. I guess we were lucky we found out when they were fixing the reflux. As for the reflux... There is so many possible things... Dayton was projectile vomitimg everything since 4days old. He had malorotion which causes it. (while they were there took his appendix out) A few months later,he started back with worse symtoms.. found out he had a blockage in the small instines.another surgery... Well he was fine till about 2 1/2 months later.. He was worse again..they decided to do the fundo which is a wrap around the eghougas(SP) to help the reflux..and place a G-tube for the aspirations. HMMMM We have been doing good till up about 2 months ago.. now they think the wrap has fell or there might be something else... Just what I wanted to hear.. So we have first got to go to the ENT.which we go to him Thursday.. We are hoping to have tonsil and anoids out.. and tubes in the ear.. I was hoping to be off ALL antibodies..NOT!!!!!! Had to get back on one yesterday..had be off for a totally 5days,and back on... Well guess I have rambled on enough.... Guest guest
Hi Gail - Rudy even at 13, still has infant reflux. When he was younger I really monitored how much he ate or drank and that seemed to help. Now that he is older, I can give him a couple of Rolaids and it works great. I still monitor his quantity because he has an eating disorder (that I can never remember the name of!!) which is common in DS. He doesnt know when he is full especially when he is drinking and will simply over do if I dont watch him. He is sneaky and will try to get things from the fridge but we're on to him!! lol

Guest guest
Hi , Last winter a was in the hospital with viruses every 2 to 3 weeks and then Jan/Feb/Mar with surgery on her trachea and heart. While she was in the hospital she would not take in enough milk on her own so they put in a G-tube. The first one they put in was a thick long tube that just hung out from her stomach and we would try to wrap up and tape down to her diapers. It was a pain! If a ever got a hold of it she would tug on it and of course hurt herself, but she would look at us like we were doing it. That G-tube would always flare up with infections behind it. I then found out about the Button G-tube and we scheduled an appointment to have the G-tube changed to that type. I can't believe they didn't put that in to begin with. The nurses at the hospital were pretty surprised too. I'm finding that some doctors aren't that great! Since she's had the Button G-tube in we have not had any infections occur. We just make sure we give her a bath regularly to keep it clean and we always keep a piece of gauze under it. This way it doesn't rub against the skin and irritate her skin. a's Pediatrician wanted us to leave the G-tube in through this winter to see if she ended back up in the hospital with viruses again. That way we would not have to have a new G-tube put back in. If she is OK through this winter we will have it removed. - mom to a (DS) and Cory - 18 months (http://www.asapnet.net/mr_mach) maybe serious problem? > > >> From: GVanHouten <rjvh@...> >> >> Hi everyone, >> The husband and I are getting very concerned with Tara. Guest guest
, I know!!!!!! was 2 though when she had her out. The dr I am going to go see has done them on younger kids.. Dayton is keeping constant ear infections and throat infections. He is having a hard time at nights with his breathing and even with the oxygen. So this makes us a more likeable to have T & A done. Thanks for the info. Re: maybe serious problem? >> >> >> >From: " Machkovich " >> <lisa_machkovich@...> >> > >> >Hi Gail, >> > >> >Our a (DS) has had a issue reflux and spitting >> up.
