I was at the haircutters today and I overheard an employee saying her son was sick and she didn’t want to give him the MMR. I just HAD to say something and she agreed with me and said “oh yes, my cousin has a child with autism and she said the same thing as you”. I also told her to NEVER feel pressured by a doctor and to follow her gut.

Even though more people are aware than 10 years ago, there are still a lot of “old schoolers” like the people running your social skills group. What is really sick is how the other parents didn’t say anything. Did you know these parents before? How old are their kids?

Can you email me directly the name so I can stay the hell away from them and not refer them to anyone?

Yeah, I bailed out of a speech therapy group after finding out it was

run by the hospital that gave the kids their fateful flu shots. It

would have been me sitting there turning purple, oxidizing from

stress and unable to keep my big mouth shut. These people are

assigned with passing around the koolade as part of their jobs or

they don't keep their jobs.

Give yourself a big hug from all of us for saying something to that

body snatcher. Who knows? Maybe there was one shocked and silent

person in the room who'd heard a little teeny something about mercury

just prior and your words set off a chain reaction in them. Someone

hit the internet that night.

But it does suck being a door breaker-downer and standing alone

through most of it. Thank God for listservs like this.

There is a certain percentage of therapists out there who are

threatened by the fact that the solution to diabilities may be

medical treatment and not what they are doing.

Here is how I handle situations like this . . . I am a rescue angel and I try to attend local autism events with a supply of materials just in case I can pass our message along.

I ordered some business cards from www.vistaprint.com, they were dirt cheap. The cards have several websites listed, including GR, NAA, ARI/DAN, etc. that people can check out at their leisure, along with my email addy and phone number to encourage further contact.

Rather than getting into a pissing contest with the person who is giving out misinformation, typically I will approach the parents after the session or presentation, introduce myself, and pass the cards out. For instance, this month I am attending a roller-skating/socializing event that one of our local ASA chapters is putting together for families of autism. I plan to be there with bells on, materials in hand.

Oh, and having my 99%-recovered son with me won't hurt, either! ;-D

I can see you being mad and not wanting to go back, but do you think your daughter could benefit from the group? If she could wouldn't it be worth it to bite your tongue and take her anyway?

BJ-

I thought of doing the same thing with the business cards. Many times people ask for info for their friends or family members.

I’ll check out the link- thanks.

Actually . . . I have customized cards for different autism-related

areas.

One batch of cards with links to special ed laws and resources for

parents who are having problems with the public school system . . .

One batch of cards with dietary links . . .

And my favorites, the cards with links for toxic exposures and autism.

One of the questions asked frequently is, " how do you get your kids in

school without the required vaccines? " and I'm always happy to oblige

with my cards featuring links to the state exemptions info.

Good for you, Tina. I wouldn't go back either. Oh, and is this NOT the U.S.? She can spew her crap in a publicforum (which are lies) and you get to say nothing to refute it.Rox Re: I am sick and tired of explaining the truth to non-believers!

I have to agree with Tina about considering not returning to the

group. First, I don't believe in allowing toxic people near our kids

because the kids really feel it. Furthermore, I just have to be

honest with myself about how these kinds of situations stress me out:

if I end up snapping at the kids, feeling more fatigued, etc.,

because of the misery of being around twisted liars, then all my own

self-coaching to " suck it up for the sake of the kids " is totally

useless. I could berate myself til the cows come home for not being

inhumanly strong enough to put up with reeking b.s. while still being

Sunshine at home, but it won't matter: I'm the children's

primary teacher and model and it's just not good for us as a family

to be exposed to sick people in the " helping professions " .

Besides, it's kind of funny that SOCIAL SKILLS are being taught by

someone who has none. People can't teach what they never learned.

When the kids are nearly recovered, I might consider hanging out in

groups like this just to infiltrate with resources for other parents,

but for now, our kids do so much better around loving, open minded

individuals who understand what happened to them, regardless of

degrees or certifications.
