My guess is, it's going to be a couple of years. Right now, this is all "speculation". Until those of us who are now doing chelation can come forward and say "see, my child is recovered, or my child is greatly improved, and here are the test results", it's just considered the latest "fad".

The best thing you can do right now is to tell as many people as possible. I've taken the information I have from Dr. Amy and also from Lyn Redwood's site, and distributed it to professionals dealing with autism. NOT the doctors, but the speech therapists, occupational therapists, special education people etc. THEY are the people who see the parents and will get the word out!

I am so puzzled to find that STILL none of the large websites related to autism have much if any mention of heavy metal and/or mercury toxicity and chlelation treatment. Anybody know WHY that is? Why isn't the word getting out? Why isn't it getting the attention it should be getting? How long does it take for an important and effective treatment method to get recognized?

Back on this again: How can the autism " experts " like Bernie Rimland and

Edelson, etc. consider heavy metal toxicity a possible " fad " ? If

laboratory test after laboratory test is showing heavy metal toxicity in so

many autistic children, how can they NOT encourage parents to get their

child tested and treated? A body can't help but improve when toxins have

been removed, right? It seems irresponsible to me. There are so many

parents of autistic children out there who don't know about this!

Bernard Rimland's site has the article on mercury. It's the one that got us

looking into mercury. From our standpoint, it's very hard to find a doctor that

is willing to follow a child through this, and that is knowledgeable. Our DAN

doctor is going off of a DAN conference with Amy Holmes, and all the info I've

given him. My son is the first in the area to start chelation. Even right now I

wouldn't advise any parent to go through with it until they've done their

research. Hopefully with my son, and my encouragement for our doctor to contact

Dr. Holmes and Dr. Bradstreet , our doctor will become more comfortable with

it.

I don't believe that these expert consider it a fad but they are more

conservative about recommending something until more research is

done. I agree with you that I think they should be more agressive in

their recommendations but they probably feel they have worked so hard

to get this far, they have to be careful. they are fairly well

accepted by the mainstream and maybe don't want to rock the boat tooo

much. They have done much for the autistic children, we should thank

them!

However, we only have much to lose by doing nothing or delaying so

lets provide them with proof. Much love, KenG

Does the ARI website consider metals toxicity the

latest " fad " ? Are you sure that is Rimland and

Edelson's position? If so, that is highly

hypocritical in light of their overwhelming support

for the secretin " fad " .

No no, I am not saying that they said it was a " fad " . That was a

response to my first post about this; that perhaps they are waiting for more

information, more research to be done before they put it on their sites and

that until then it may be considered the latest fad. (see below) And yes,

Rimland's site (ARI) did post the Autism/Mercury paper which was very Very

informative and eye opening. And I DO appreciate it. But a good deal of

time has gone by since then and I'm wondering why there isn't more recent

information about what's being done, etc. It seems to me that with so many

children turning up toxic, this is BIG and it isn't getting the attention I

think it should be getting.

Then again, when I was new to Sara's Diet (non-pigmented food diet) I

wondered why there wasn't any information about this on other sites, too.

I'm sorry. My mistake. I have not checked their

website in quite a while. I did not think it was

consistent with their past support for new

interventions to call it a " fad " , that's why I was

confused. I hope that I did not confuse anyone else

(I think I should read other people's responses before

I send off my questions, usually my confusion is

cleared up if i do that)
