Hi everyone, I received this email from a friend. It looks very

interesting.

The following was posted to the Down-syn list this weekend:

Subject: NEW Locator Device for our Wanderers -- Long

(large chunk edited out by LA)

www.wherify.com. I know this is a problem that reaches many of us. I

have just learned of a new product, which is scheduled for release in

September, by a company called " Wherify " . It is a tamper proof

locator device, which unlike Care Trekker does not require a direct

locator device and bulky equipment (and doesn't cost $1300), but is

monitored by satellite all throughout the US. So, if we are on

vacation in Florida or New York (we live in Washington west coast),

we change our contact information online, and if he gets lost, they

can notify us immediately wherever we are. They have many different

plans available, but the bottom line is a $399 initial cost, and

monthly monitoring plans of $24-$49 per month depending upon usage.

If we get the $24 package, this means we have 20 online locates per

month, which includes a page sounder to help locate a " hider " in a

defined area, or an online map, supposedly within 1 foot of their

actual location, with an address and zoom. In addition to online

anytime, you are allowed x number of call-in searches, and a certain

number of 911 response assist locates per year. I spoke with our

local police department yesterday after thanking them for finding

J___, and they told me this was definitely something they would

consider because it does not require any equipment outlay on their

part -- just education. (I guess if J___'s school or parks programs

lose him more than 20 times per month I have a bigger problem than I

think -- but the fun part is I can check the locator section online

and see exactly when and where they use it -- while my notebook from

the school may be silent on the issue if you know what I mean!!)

I have also contacted J___'s case manager with DSHS and she is

attempting to get flex funding from his newly received family support

funds (after a 9 year battle which is an entire other story), for the

expenditure and after reviewing the web site feels it is by far the

most cost effective and overall easy to use system that she has seen

to date. She tried to get a group rate for other clients that need

the same service, but they aren't making deals at the moment.

THE BAD NEWS -- This is a new product that has been in development

for a few years, but you need to be wait listed for shipment

beginning in September. If you are at all interest, I would suggest

that you check out their web site at www.wherify.com and make your

own decisions. There is a wait list for first production release, and

they are apparently then considering going retail in the future. I

absolutely consider this a god-send, and even if I can't get his case

manager to cover it, I will pay for it myself. You can also do

a " google.com " search on personal locator devices and read all the US

wide press this product is receiving as well as their development

proticol.

DISCLAIMER -- Ok, I have been in this group for about 9 or 10 years

now, so I know I need to put in a disclaimer that I absolutely under

no circumstances am a sales rep, or investor in this company. It is a

privately held company, and I hold no stock or interest whatsoever in

it -- just the interest in the welfare of my son and our other

wanderers.

INTERNATIONAL USERS -- there is a specific section that addresses

international use, and while their web site appears to currently only

cover the US, there is potential for international development so if

you are interested, let them know so they can get this technology

global.

Ok, enough said. I have put J___ in for this one, while I have passed

on all the other devices over the past 9 years. I hope to get it in

the first shipment in September, and will let you all know the

success or failure after we get it.

God bless you and your families. While I miss you all, I just don't

have time to monitor daily, and am lucky to catch up every week or

two or three. Please feel free to contact me directly if you want

more information, and I will definitely let you know when we get the

locator and how it all works out. If we can save one of our children

a terrible tragedy we learn about every day from children across our

country, I will count ourselves blessed. This appears to be a very

good deal, and while I am always wary of " snake oil " , I am trusting

both our local police and J___'s case manager that this is one of the

best systems going!!!!

Best wishes, T___ (mom to J___, DS 12 1/2)
