Re: AS/ASA VH1 donations

Hi - I am going to ask my husband about this so-called donation connection. VH1 may have just taken it upon themselvesto split proceeds. It just confounds me when AS refers to themselves as the largest autism organization, blah, blah. They are not the oldest, nor the most respected, nor the most knowledgeable as evidenced by their genetic panderings/meanderings. If my husband (treasurer of national ASA) does not know about this, it is of VH1's doings to split proceeds.Rox Re:More about AutismSpeaks in Pittsburgh

My daughter was watching VH1 yesterday and told me that there was

something on about autism. I learned that the cable channel VH1

Classic has been sponsoring what they call Rock Autism.

As I still have a great deal of confusion about what Rock Autism is,

(even after reading this from the Northeast Ohio Autism Group ..

http://groups. / group/EOHarm/ message/70093 )

and who has sponsored or developed it, and who is benefiting from it,

and how it differs from Rock the Puzzle (which I understand was

developed by the Northeast Ohio Autism Group), I looked into the

matter a little bit. I am pretty sure that I saw somewhere that Rock

Autism money is going to Autism Speaks. (it did last year..) But there

are so many groups with so many acronyms a person could make it a

career trying to keep track of them all.

I did come across this link

http://www.autism- society.org/ site/News2? page=NewsArticle & id=10129

which I found rather disturbing. If you go there, you'll see that it

is an ASA site, and from this site one can purchase Rock Autism tee

shirts. The site says that by buying these shirts "you'll be helping

VH1 Classic raise awareness about autism", and "a portion of the

proceeds from the sale of this shirt will be donated to the Autism

Society of America."

What I would like to know is, what portion? How much of the proceeds

will go to ASA, and how much will go to AS?

My husband has suggested that I look into tax benefits for charitable

organizations, when I told him that I really didn't understand how

these organizations were supposed to work but that it didn't really

seem to me that very much of the money they raise ends up doing much

good toward the cause that they're originally founded for. It seems to

me as tho gobs of money pours in through all sorts of various small

autism organizations, and then it all gets shifted around from here to

there and then from there to there and then around a bit more between

different people and different groups of people and different

organizations, and after it goes around and round a while, most of it

eventually ends up back in the coffers, somehow, of Autism Speaks.

All of which disturbs me a lot, because I happen to know that AS isn't

working to help families that are dealing with autism, they are

working to blame the autism strictly on their genetics, and to shut up

anyone who suggests iatrogenic cause. It disturbs me a lot because

I've been throwing my support behind ASA thinking that they are

different from AS.

But now I'm not so sure, and I have to say that nothing I've learned

in the last week or so has cleared up my confusion on this matter.

Last year I know that the money raised from Cleveland Rocks Autism,

which was held at the House of Blues, and where I was told I would

have to leave or face arrest for handing out information about

thimerosal, was benefiting AS and CAN.

If I go to this website

http://www.vh1. com/partners/ vh1classic_ rock_autism/

I am told "here are many incredible organizations across the country

dedicated to supporting families touched by autism, and who are

researching the causes of this disorder. Below is a small selection of

just some of the great organizations that are working towards these

goals." And they go on to list ARI, AutismLink, Autism Speaks, Autism

One, ASA, and CAN. But they don't say anything about money going to

these organizations. How much, if any, of the proceeds go to each

organization listed here? I've emailed them at

vh1classicrockautis mvh1staff (DOT) com to ask them this. I wonder if ARI

is even aware that they're listed on this site?

What I would really like to see is an organization that will tell me,

in a public statement "no, we are not in any way affiliated with

Autism Speaks. None of the money we raise in any way benefits Autism

Speaks." I've gone so far as to tell the local chapter of the ASA as

much. Perhaps I'm expecting too much, but seeing organizations like

ARI listed on the same fund raising website as AS makes me feel as tho

ARI's gotten in bed with the devil.

After the holidays I will check out these websites which were

suggested by my newspaper—give. org, and charitynavigator. org.

Hopefully they can sort it all out.

I have the name and contact info for the guy at VH1 and I wrote to him

awhile ago and asked this question. Let me dig through my email and

I'll post it.

the " best " at something, doesn't mean you've earned the respect of

Well geez that took all of two minutes. Here you go:

Hi ,

This is Jayan, I believe I spoke to you over the phone the other day.

Thanks for your email -- we already have a link up to your site on

ours, and think your site offers a great resource for parents. So many

of them have been asking us for information and local resources, and

we feel that your site is a great place for them to turn to in terms

of finding help in their local area.

As far as partnerships, while we will be working at times with groups

such as Autism Speaks, we are also trying to support a variety of

other organizations through our efforts.

Please feel free to reach out to me at the number listed below if you

have any other questions about our initiative.

Best regards,

Jayan
