.. what I am waiting for in reimbursement for biomedical treatments... my son does not have TIME to wait for all the studies to be done... yes.. I am cynical here.. not towards you.. but in general... time is of the essence for our kids... I have been doing biomedical with him for 13 years... how much longer should we all wait for insurance to pay for the cod liver oil.. the vitamin B 12... the money towards the gf/cf breads.. ect... In plain english...

We ran into problems in the Senate because of the rhetoric and brew

haha from the insurance industry lobbyists. It was referred to the

" Health Care Cost Containment Council " -- the place where good bills

go to die. It's still there, HOWEVER...

We (Jim Bouder) provided the HC4 with documentation from the Kaiser

Family Health Foundation that shows the average joe's insurance policy

would go up less than 1%. We are hoping that HC4 sees through the

" crap " and passes it back on to the senate. They will let us know on

January 10th -- which will be a huge day for us. The chair of the

Senate Autism Caucus is on our board of directors at AutismLink.

I have to say that Autism Speaks has been INSTRUMENTAL in getting this

bill through. They hired extremely expensive lobbyists -- the best

firm in the country, to get this through. As much as I B$% & %$# about

them, they have helped a great deal. Although, the funny thing is, we

do all the legwork in getting the parents unified and making the calls

and going to visit legislators, etc.

We had a conference call with them and I set up documents online that

everyone has access to so we can all rally the parents, and guess who

has the only entry in the document? Moi.

I want this bill to go through, obviously, but if they come in and

take credit for everything again, I think I will go over the edge. My

head will begin to spin in circles while I mutter " redrum. "

I want to believe that they are doing the right thing, that they'll

eventually give grants to good organizations without making the grant

application process require 3 PhD's and an MD to complete. That

they'll throw some money toward researching REAL biomedical aspects,

like vaccinations for instance, and the connection with the gastro

issues, etc. (Something in addition to genetics.)

At this point, after being burned so many times, I'm cynically

optimistic, but incredibly skeptical.

well don't expect reimbursement for bio-med treatments in Pa in the near future-not even if this insurance bill is passed. Most state insurnce laws passed cover the behavioral treatments-bio- med is still considered experimental. Well let's get serious here -- we can't even get them to cover

traditional therapies like speech and OT, let alone biomed treatments.

One step at a time. Let's get this one through first!!!

Heck, they're still saying ABA isn't effective and that's why they

won't pay for it. Imagine what would say if you asked them to pay for

chelation!

Rome wasn't built in a day, my dear. One block at a time. We're

dealing with politicians here and we all know they aren't the

brightest bulbs on the chandelier.

It IS for speech and OT and such.... It's just that we had one heck

of a time trying to convince them. And I can't recall where, but an

insurance company put out a bulletin or made a comment in a newspaper

somewhere that said ABA isn't scientifically proven to work, blah

blah. I'll look it up for you if you're interested.

My point with all of that was -- we had a hell of a time getting them

to cover TRADITIONAL therapies let alone biomedical.

I think this is really too bad, the way

the process is going. Even if they have been really helpful, they way it is

being done is not the most effective way of doing things at the state level.

They need to let the locals do it. If they want to help and pay for lobbyists,

great, but let the locals run the campaign, or hire someone with a grant from

AS to do so. Legislatures will be much more responsive to the local people, not

anyone from a national org, not matter how much Hollywood power they have.

I was involved as a grassroots organizer

for several state campaigns on tobacco issues during the 90’s when the

major brunt of tobacco laws were passed here in Maine. The stakeholders

involved had a formal coalition set up where all decisions were made. The goal,

with dealmakers and breakers were agreed upon ahead of time and all orgs

involved (usually around 8 majors one) stayed on the same page throughout. The

national group, campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (similar in some ways to AS)

provided funding and sometimes technical support to the coalition to help get

the bills passed. But they never ever had a say, spent time testifying or

lobbying, or had a part as a coalition member. They left it up to the local

expects.

I wish AS would do the same. Even if the

locals don’t have the experience, AS could serve to provide funding for consultants

and lobbyists (expert lobbyists from that state) that are employed and governed

by the coalition. I would suggest anyone involved at the grassroots levels in

any of the other states pushing this legislation, it might be worth creating a

formal coalition. That might at least force the hand of AS to give credit where

credit is due and maybe let the locals have more official roles in the process.

Becky, What you describe is precisely what we did in NY a couple of years ago...successfully.Except that no one provided us with money, and the large national group tried to take the credit.I think some people were watching us closely, and saw that the insurance issue is a good one for our community.
