Question - Can I start my own charity? My seven yr. old with NLD, APD, SPD etc needs to go to a special needsschool which costs $3000 a month, or $300,000 for the next 11 years.Otherwise, we are stuck at a public school in the ghetto, who have denied us an IEPfor lack of funding! Can I use this site for that? To raise money for my child's education? Thanks.AliOn Mar 2, 2011, at 12:16 AM, jon singer wrote:

I have not heard of the site.

I assume you are in the U.S.? Yes, you can start a nonprofit, and people have

raised money for their children specifically in the past. However, there is a

lot of paperwork, a hefty application fee, and your request could potentially be

declined.

You might want to do a search online for someone who has done fundraising for a

specific child (thinking cancer expense, etc.) and see if they would give you

some tips. If you have a friend who is an attorney, or someone who does pro

bono work, they might be able to help you with advice and guidance through the

process.

Have you asked about scholarships?

Also, You might want to consult an attorney or at least an advocate about the

lack of IEP. I met a mom who got her son a private placement after a long while

simply because she was completely annoying and they wanted her to go away.

Do you get slaw emails? You might want to subscribe, I think it is free.
