She takes it in combination with Zoloft and we have seen a huge improvement. She is functioning so much better on the combo. One problem she has, though, is that she has gained a lot of weight on the Risperdal, so we are concerned about that. She is doing well enough that even though her dad was recently diagnosed with cancer, and she has had a very difficult time dealing with that, her OCD is essentially still under control. I was also afraid of this med, but will also tell you that my daughter absolutely does not want to go off of it. Good luck. I'm a single mom,with 4 children with Ocd, Anxiety, depression, ADHD, and Tourettes..all have different combos... The one I wanted to ask advice about is my 9 yr old daughter.... She has OCD, severe anxiety (right now it's weather..clouds, wind, breeze,you name it,) and she's in an all out panic situation.... They had to put her on home bound schooling...(Just to mention, her 17 yr old sister had the EXACT same fear at the same age..lasted about a year or 2, and then she learned to deal with it slowly) Anyway, they have her on Zoloft 50mg.. we tried higher but get more behavior problems (she's normally a sweet child, but gets angry and " out of character " ) well..we also tried Prozac, Celexa,with the same results...During the last 3 months or so, her anger has gotten worse, just in like spurts..she'll rage and scream and throw thing's.. then a half hour later, be crying in my arms shaking, asking me if somethings really wrong with her... I've actually gotten scared cause this child is not the one I know...these rages are just not the " real " her...the rest of the kids are walking on eggshells too... I took her to her Dr. a few day's back who said it's a possibility she's showing signs of bi polar disorder too???? And wants to start her on small amounts of risperdal...she said it could help stabilize her mood, and work on the anger and anxiety... Has anyone else heard of this, or dealt with this kind of thing before???? I know of many parents, from reading in these online groups, who have kids take it for behavior/moods, impulsiveness.... It's worked well for many. But I've also read that sometimes it is used to help " boost " the effect of the SSRI, i.e., it has been given for that reason alone and not to help with behavior and other. So it seems like, if you decide to try it, she might get the benefit in 2 ways, towards the Zoloft and her moods. http://www.risperdal.com/ And from an article Medications used to enhance the efficacy of SSRIs or Anafranil in reducing OCD symptoms (often referred to as " augmentation " ) include: BuSpar (buspirone), Remeron (mirtazapine), Klonopin (clonazepam), Risperdal (risperidone), Zyprexa (olanzapine), Seroquel (quetiapine), Depakote (divalproex), Neurontin (gabapentin), Lamictal (lamotrigine), Ultram (tramadol), and Lithium Carbonate. In addition, Inositol, a B-vitamin available without prescription from most health-food stores and many pharmacies, has shown effectiveness in reducing OCD symptoms when taken with SSRIs, and, in some cases, even when taken alone (although dosages had to be pushed to fairly high levels). http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/OCDmeds.html How did your older daughter do on medications, that is if she took any?? Also, any bipolar on your's or dad's side of the family? Seems like people say it tends to run in families too (like OCD seems to at times). I'm a single mom too, 3 sons! It is such a struggle sometimes...I wanted to let you know that my youngest daughter, , has been on Risperdal for at least four years and she is twelve now. She also takes Luvox. Her's is a diagnosis of only OCD and you might find that the " bipolar " is uncontrolled OCD. Before started taking it, she was out of control and would scream and cry for hours at a time. My oldest daughter, Hannah, also takes an antipsychotic. She has been on Abilify for at least three years. has had no weight gain on the Risperdal. Good luck!
